Raising and Closing Awning....

I assume these PUP awnings would be hard to reach after opening unit.So is it best or can it be done before raising top?We've never had it out yet,and am going camping this weekend.What is a good procedure to follow for raising and lowering awning???
 
maybe taking a step stool will be a good idea,to reach rafter support brackets.any ideas would be appreciated..........Jim

I am interested in the answer to this question, too.
We carry a stepping stool which is handy for lots of thing.
Because of wind, the awnings often go up and down at inconvenient times.

I think the way to do it is raise the roof half way.  Open the awning bag and let it hang until you raise the roof the rest of the way.  Then finish setting up the awning.  Then when you are leaving you do that in reverse.  

Or if you always forget like me you will need something stable to stand on like a stool, which I also like to bring along.  Like thebecks said, you may have to put it away at any time.  So having the stool is useful.

I set mine up (and take it down) the same way.  If I do have to take it down before the roof is lowered I stand on my cooler ... the stool I have in the PU isn't tall enough for me to reach the roof  :p

Don't for get to tie it down.....and leave one side lower, so if it rains it just runs off and doesn't pool up....also becareful to have it set up high enough so the corner of the Pop Up door doesn't catch it and tear it up.

Yep this is how it's done except in our case my DH is 6'5" and if we forget he just gets it put up.......Nice to have a tall man around the pup.....

This is the process I use to set up and take down my awning.  With good stakes and tie downs I've been able to withstand some windy conditions but I do carry a small step stool.

It is easiest to get the awning out and put it away as the top is going up or down.  However, it would be good to be able to set it up and put it away with the top fully up.  If you experience any kind of high wind while you're camping, the safest thing to do to protect your awning and/or camper would be to furl the awning.  The tie downs will not give full protection in all storm situations.  I will often use a drywall bucket as a step stool.  It'll give you a nice 14" to 16" extra reach, much better than most step stools.
