are peple getting ruder.

On the way home from Florida I had about 3 instances that make me wonder if any type of courtesy still exists today.

At a gas station, I had just finished filling up when a Jeep pulls into the pump ahead of me.  Well I figured that I would have to wait until the person bought her gas to pull out.  I had the trailer behind me.

She, her mother and a guy then proceeded to throw trash out of the car into the garbage can, sweep out the back of the Jeep and start to fold clothes.

I finally asked her if she was going to buy any gas because I would like to leave.  She answered yes but took her sweet time pumping the gas.  Guy told me to drive around or back up.  One I would have taken out his Jeep and 2. there were cars behind me.

DW was driving and we noticed we had to move over one lane to get back on the highway.  We were stopped at a stop light.  I signaled the guy next to us who was near the rear of the trailer that we would like to pull into the right lane.  When the light changed, DW started to pull over and the guy just sped up forcing us to stay in our lane.  He had a raised digit.

At a campground that we were staying at for one night, we arrived and went to our site.  There was another camper on the site.  The guy came out and started hollering at DW that he knew he was on our site but his site was a swamp and now that he was all set up, we shouldn't mind if he stayed there.  We asked him if he had contacted the office.  He said NO because he didn't want to walk back to the office.  We did exchange a few words but he was mostly quiet.  Dw called the office and they said that they would send security down to have him move.  Decided to go on the other site.  Too tired after driving over 400 miles to wait to set up.

However, I did happen to mention to him, several times when I saw him outside of his tt about camping etiqutte and how he should have handled the situation.  He never said a word.

Yup, there was a swamp on the site near the sewer hookup.  When I took a closer look at the situation in the morning, some nut had just dumped his grey water without hooking up.

I guess I remember when courtesy use to be a common thing along with Please and Thank you.

Story of my life here in Los Angeles! hahahahahaha

Sorry, I know what a bummer to be treated like that.  Just know that most people are nice..... but the bad ones are so bad that they really stick out ;)

Best wishes for better times!!!  :)

I agree that common courtesy has largely gone by the wayside.  I've found that it's often because people seem to always be in a hurry to get somewhere.  In this day and age, people's lives seem to mirror their work, which is get stuff done as fast as possible regardless of the mess left behind or who you hurt.  It's all about making money and saving money.

I've yet to find a reason or situation to be rude to somebody initially.   I'm just not wired that way.  I will always hold a door for someone and always say "Thank you" when someone does for me.  I wish people were more courteous, but I've learned to just roll with the punches.  Doesn't make it any less of a problem, though.

Gene, I would hope that you met more people who were considerate than were inconsiderate.  Are you back home at this point?  Say hello to Terry for us.

List (Partial) of the Things Members of This "Age" Are Entitled To.

(NOTE:  List provided with tongue planted firmly in cheek.)
  • Not just any job, but the job of their choice at the wage they expect.
  • Home ownership, regardless of ability to pay.
  • As many "toys" as they want, not as many as they can afford.
  • The front of the line, whether it be at the amusement park, on the freeway, when a new check stand opens up,.....
  • Freedom to conduct personal business on company time, using company resources.
  • Freedom to use the language they want regardless of the ears that may be in range. (Example:  "That bleepin' blap should bleep off!!" in front of your toddler.)
  • Freedom to play their "music" at a volume and bass setting that rattles your fillings when you are 4 vehicles behind them.

Please feel free to add to the list. :D

Don't you just love it when others go out of their way to entertain you.......whether you like it or not.... :swear:

It's just sad that so many people act so rude, especially since their kids learn the same nasty behavior.  And it's just within the last couple of generations.  I'm not very old (still considered a spring chicken by some), and me and my friends were all taught to use please, thank you, yes ma'am/sir, no ma'am sir from a very early age.

I remember something that happened about 11 years ago that still makes my blood boil.  My father is a "southern gentleman" who opens the car door and holds open doors for a lady.  My parents, brother, husband and I were coming out of a restaurant, and this woman was coming toward the entrance.  My father held the door open for the woman, and she gave him a dirty look and growled,  "I can do it myself, thankyouverymuch!"  I just wanted to slap the shine off her face!  I do seem to recall making a comment to my husband like, "I'll bet I can guess why she's eating alone."

Ah yes.  I call it "The Fxxx You generation."   But, I think "The age of entitlement" really nails it down.

So GeneF, go add to the "Lessons Learned on the Fly" thread:
1) When getting fuel pull to the forward most pump, in order to keep yourself from being boxed in.

2) When parking in a parking lot, pull through several spaces so that you can't be boxed in.

3) If you want a lane, and no one will let you in, give the steering wheel a quick tug to whip the back end of the trailer, and then start pulling in.....watch with a smile as the cars part around you!

Sorry all that happened to you.  Just know that you are not alone.  I had a big rig yesterday force me onto the shoulder of the road in my Rabbit Pickup as I merged out onto the freeway.  He had a clear lane to his left, but instead, held his line, and since I couldn't outrun him, down along the shoulder I went.   Really pissed me off.  But like the merge sign indicates, it's my job to blend, not his job to let me in.

When I pulled in, there was another car fueling so I didn't have a choice but normally, I pull up if I can.

There are some nice people out there but when you have towed 4 to 500 miles you tend to be on the tired side.

On the other end, I did pull into another gas station to fuel up with the same situation, another car in front.  DW got out of the truck and started asking the lady about the meaning of the words on her T-Shirt.

Dw mentioned our episode at the last gas station.  The Lady said, well I will just leave the hose in my car until you are done so that no one can get ahead of you.  She did and we thanked her.

I know there are some great people out there but for some reason I had a hard time believing the audicity of some people.  Guess I didn't learn enough about people after teaching high school for 30 years.

Sometimes people deserve a punch right square in the mouth.

I know what you mean ~ you so want to give people the benefit of the doubt and want them to live up to your expectations.  Stinks when it doesn't happen.

I'm still doing my part ... trying to teach my kids common courtesy and respect.  Some days it's tough to counterbalance all the other messages they are taking in.  And some days it just works.  I picked up my two youngest from Scouts yesterday and as we were leaving (without any prompting) both girls told their guest speaker thank you.  Sure made me smile.

On a side note ~ when will your travels bring you back to MN, Gene?  It's been awhile ....

Hargus

Hi Gene,
If you come to the PUT Rally in PA in July, we'll promise to be courteous and polite to you!!
