Motorhome Last Fall, No Job This January

Well I bought the used 1987 36 foot motorhome last fall with good intentions of doing some camping this year. January 23rd was my last day at work after almost 12 years. Fairchild Semiconductor had some major cutbacks and my job was one of those that got shipped overseas. I can't justify putting any money into the motorhome at this time so it rests in my back driveway. It will probably get some driveway camping this year.......I have a firepit not too far from the camper.

Not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing. Last time this happened I qualified for two years of free training due to foreign competition. That is when I got my degree in Electromechanical Technology. This time I also qualify for retraining but I have to wait 6 months from my layoff date to apply.

Now it looks like I am just going to dive in and start a business. I have always had a strong interest in alternative energy. I am going to start out with Solar Window Boxes for air heat that I manufacture and move on to solar water heating and then possibly on to wind power.

If the business picks up, I will have to buy a pickup truck. If I have a pickup truck I think I will just go back to a popup or a hybrid and sell the motorhome.

Charlie,
Good luck with your new business I hope it works out for you and the family seems like our country is ready for this sort of thing.  Anyway keep on camping if only in the driveway it does bring the family close and memories are made.......cw

Lost my job 4 years ago....started my own business 6 months after that and was the best thing I could have done.  Business has been a huge success.

So what I'm saying is go for it ....you won't be sorry.   And Good Luck!

Sorry to hear about your job loss Charlie, but congratulations on tackling this new adventure of a new business and solar power. It sure seems to be the way to go now. Any business related to solar energy or renewable energy is booming right now.

As for the motorhome, it's a pity you have not had a chance to get to enjoy it more. We have had ours for 16 months now and have gone camping at least once a month, twice during the summer. DW loves it, as do the kids. So hopefully you will get a chance to use it soon and not have to sell it.
