OC Campers

That is a HUGE list.  I hope they don't go thru with this.  I understand the state is in trouble but where will people camp?  I would rather pay a little more to camp there then to lose the parks all together.

We were having the same conversation...  Where will people go?  I bet they close the parks and raise the fees for the ones they are leaving open.

Sad times.....

All the campgrounds in Orange County (Curtain) are not on the list.

Here's an idea:

Instead of closing the CGs, how about if the state takes over the reservation system from Reserve America? The state can still charge the reservation fee; heck they can even raise prices a little, but the money that (incompetent and inconvenient) Reserve America usually gets would then go to our state; they wouldn't have to close the CGs, and I have a feeling we'd have an easier time of getting sites in the CGs.

Let's start writing our letters......This just can't happen...

Oh that's a great idea......Let's have the reservation system run by State employees and State bureaucracy. We'll have another DMV in no time.

I say just the opposite. Let the State sell all off those CGs to private enterprise. Not only would the State raise BILLIONS$$$$$$$$$. The CGs would be run more efficiently at less cost. I've already shown how inefficient Pt Mugu is.......common, $90K a year in gross revenue. That's outrageous. No wonder they need to close these places. It cost the State that much to dump the toilets and man the guard shacks.

It's poor management and State bureaucracy that is causing this. I say less....not more.

Illinois just went through this last year.  Thankfully, with Blago removed from office, all Illinois state parks and historic sites have reopened for now. Actions were prepared to let local counties "rent" the state parks from the state and operate them as county parks, but ultimately these plans did not have to be implemented. Statewide petitions were circulated, both online and with wet ink signatures. Local "friends of the state park" groups organized, sponsored events, and all contacted their state legislators.

I suspect we will be seeing more park closings at state and national levels as some progressives want the funds currently used for maintaining parks to be used instead for social services.

Besides...for some "environmentalists", conservation means protecting and preserving nature from humans which would ultimately mean...no hunting, no fishing, no bicycling, no off-road vehicles, no firearm/archery shooting ranges, no geocaching, no swimming, and certainly no camping.

Finally, you can't tow with hybrids or plug-in electrics, so closing parks would save the planet from the gas-wasting RV campers and their smoky carbon-emitting campfires.

Let us out-of-state readers know how we can assist your fight to preserve your state parks.

Did we not go through the same thing last year with them proposing to close 48 parks? and then nothing came of it except for a slight increase in fees, from $6 to $8 for a day pass and camping fees raised from $36 to $44.

I can't believe they have our favorite campground listed, Seacliff State Beach, where the 26 full hook up sites are almost booked 100% of the time and reservations for weekends get booked up within seconds of them becoming available on Reserve America and on summer weekends they have to turn cars away because the parking lot is full.

I agree with Wavery, they should be sold to private enterprises that would run them a lot more efficiently, reservations would be easier.
