Hi, I have a 2005 rockwood model 1910. My question is about lubing the axle. I'm thinking it had something called the ez lube system? I think all you had to do was take  off the cap and lube it and you were good to go. Does that sound right. Thanks for the help. I'm new to the pup world.:usflag:

The proper way to do it is to remove the bearings, clean them, inspect them and re-install. This should be done every couple years, depending on the usage of the trailer. The more often the trailer is used, the less concern about the bearings. If the trailer sits for a year without moving, check and pack the bearings. If the trailer is used every day, you may be able to go 3-5 years. It's all about sitting and moisture. It is seldom about lack of grease. It really takes very little grease to keep the bearings lubricated. Filling the hub with grease can cause more problems than it can cure.

EZ Lube and similar bearings were designed to keep water out of boat trailer bearings. They really are useless on a camping or utility trailer.

I've made some long distance road trips in the hot summer months and I like the idea of being able to give the the bearings a "little shot" of grease. Although I do not have the EZ lube system, I like the idea in principle.  But like the Dexter Axle web site says ... there should still be regular maintenance.

On my boat trailers there have been "Bearing Buddies" that are simular in that grease could be added, but the primary purpose of the Bearing Buddy was to keep a positive pressure inside the hub to keep water out when backing the boat trailer into water.

When I've made long distance runs during a year with high mileage I always doing the annual maintenace routine on the hubs. With high gas prices I've cut those distances down considerably. Sometimes under these conditions I'll let the maintenace slide to every other year.

:usflag: Thanks for the info. I guess it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Dexter Axle Complete Service Manual see page 53-54 for EZ lube lubrication, periodic inspection required!

I've created a "PopUp" directory that hasa collection of digital manuals.
