Just wondered if anyone has any recommendations on camping at the Outer Banks.  Will be down next month - but staying in a rental house.  Thinking about checking out some of the campgrounds for a trip next year.

I have stayed at Hatteras KOA in Rodanthe. Next time i will be at Ocean Waves. I drove through it and it was nice and lots of more shade!!!!!!

Ocean Waves looks pretty good.  Also, liked the website for Camp Hatteras - they have three pools including an indoor one which would give us something to do in the event of inclement weather.  From the looks of the place I expect they don't see too many pop-ups - kind of pricey too!

I have stayed at both Ocean Waves and Camp Hatteras, both are nice campgrounds. Camp-H offers far more amenities, and over 400 camp sites. It also cost more than twice what Ocean Waves will cost you. Both offer Water, Electric, Sewer, & Cable TV hook-up's, Camp-H is around $70 per night while OWC is around $32 per night. Both offer ocean front access, pool, store, game room etc...

We used to go down to Camp-H twice per year, a small group of us would rent 3 sites side by side. Then we discovered OWC and how much less it costs us, not to mention they had shade tree's and Camp-H didn't have a tree in the entire place. It was a no brainer for us, we switched and have NEVER gone back to Camp-H again...

They didn't have a website, and I was otherwise so impressed with OWC's operation, that I offered to build and host a website for them. And to this day, I'm still hosting that webiste (www.oceanwavescampground.com)... Clyde & Carolyn have been booked solid ever since. Reservations are difficult to get, good luck!!

Cilff, very nice job with the web site. I saved that link in my camping folder. We'll be going there asap.

I like how you have pics of some of the sites. Please add more.

When I opened the pic for spot 30, I thought, hey, that looks like my camper!! I opened the hi res pic and, I cant read the name on the side, but it looks exactly like my PuP. I mean exactly. That was cool.

Is there enough rooms between spots to put up an EZUp or two?

When we poked our heads into Camp H, I thought they didn't take popups?!

Camp-H does indeed take PU's, that is all I had at the time we were staying there. But without shade a PU gets extremely hot. Ocean breeze does help.

As for OWC, there is plenty of room at the site for an EZ-up type of thing. Be forewarned they are trying to make a living at this campground and charging only half what the the KOA & Camp-H charge, so when you set something 'extra' on the site it generally means extra money. They have never charged me for an ez-up, but they have charged me dearly for putting up a tent as well as my camper.

As for getting reservations at OWC, you could get lucky for this season if you call them, but they only have 68 campsites and at their prices the place stays booked. But you never know, they cancelations too.

Best method for obtaining reservations at OWC, are to SNAIL MAIL your reservation request so that it is dated Jan 1st/2nd (they won't accept them dated in December) they live in Florida in the winter so the phone wont work either, also they do not do reservations via email during the winter. Include all the dates you are interested, and they will even try and reserve specific campsites if you ask for them. If you wait til they open for the season March 15th and call them, they will already be booked solid.
