Can anyone recommend campgrounds in the Mount Rushmore/Custer SP area?

You can either camp at Custard State Park and watch the bison walk through your campground, or you can stay at the Rafter J Bar campground outside the park and this is a very nice campground too.  Clean rest rooms and large sites and a swimming pool.  Have fun, wish I could go too.

I've heard really good things about Rafter J, Tracy.   When are you going to be there?  We're considering heading that way next summer ... maybe we'll get a chance to camp together?

Kelly that would be great.  I have to see what I get for vacation, but the end of July is what I am aiming for.  Any chance you could make it then?

That might just work.  My sister lives in Great Falls, MT ~ this is our "meet-in-the-middle-visit".  I'll have to check with her on the dates.  Watch your email.  I'll keep you updated.[/FONT]

Before you make firm plans, find out when the Sturgis Hawg rally is, and plan to be there at any other time.

I am sure the population of the area doubles or triples that week, all of them on Motorcycles.  Prices for campgrounds and other accomodations rise accordingly.

The rally is after my vacation plans.  Thanks for pointing it out.:)

AB is right.  I believe the rally is like the first week of AUG.  We were there at that time and boy was it wild!  I made a side trip into Sturgis just to see the happenings and we did see.  In my next life I want to be someones motocycle momma, biker chick, hawg queen or whatever you want to call it.:D Campgrounds are booked for weeks before and after the rally, so plan ahead.

I am totally unfamiliar with South Dakota and looking at the Custer S.P. Web site did not help much. There are so many campgrounds! If anyone has camped there I could use some help. We like the feeling of wilderness (don't need to be near swimming pools, etc.) but clean washhouses are a definite plus! Thanks!

We stayed at Mystery Mountain back in '06 and absolutely loved it. It was extremely wooded and quiet and located about 10-15 minutes from Rapid City and about 20 minutes to Mt. Rushmore. The sites and interior roads are a little tight if you have a 'big rig' but I managed just fine by driving slow with our Honda Odyssey van and FW Victory (12' box).
