My kids are notorious for washing their hands and forgetting to turn the pump off?  Is that a problem?  I figure you take a shower and leave the pump on so 10-15 minutes shouldn't be a problem, but what about several hours?
Dern kids.

Does the pump shut itself off a few seconds after the water is off?  If not, the pump's pressure sensor is defective and the pump will eventually burn out.

If you are dry camping, the pressure sensor may use a trivial amount of power (but probably uses zero when the pump is off).  If the switch is lighted (mine is) that probably uses more power than the presure sensor.

Sometimes the check valve at the pump may leak a little, causing the pump to turn on for a few seconds every few hours.  Very annoying when trying to sleep.

Other than that, I don't know of any issues with leaving it on all the time when not connected to city water.

Thanks Austin.

My pump has a switch by the sink that has to be turned off.  As soon as you hit the switch the water shuts off, but just like at home, it's somehow very hard for the kids to hit the light switches even.  Something we have to work on I guess.

You might want to consider replacing the simple "on/off" switch with a timer switch.........;)

Good idea Wavery.  I will add that to the to do list.  Thanks

I would try to find a switch that is calibrated in seconds instead of minutes.;)

JaycoNewbies,

Let me re-ask the question that Austin posed... Doesn't your pump shut off when it has pressurized the system?

I have the same pump switch you have but there are only three times that I use it.

1. When the tank is empty and the pump will run forever,
2, During transportation or if I'm leaving the PUP for a day trip... just in case something goes wrong while I'm towing or away.
3, For winterizing when I'm pumping antifreeze and not pressurizing the system

Other than that, the switch stays on and the pump switches on when I open a faucet and shut off when it has re-pressurized the system.

Wow! You sure take fast showers!

I talked with my husband and he said that the pump does shut off after it gets pressurized and kicks back on if a lot of water is used.  Sorry for the trouble.  I could swear that I hear a noise when the switch is turned on, even after it is pressurized.

HeRuide...are you saying that when you are not on city water that you don't have to turn your switch to "on"?  I think I am confusing myself.

That is correct.  The pump should not be turned on and should not need to run if connected to city water, because the water system is pressurized by the city water connection.

JaycoNewbies,

Austin is correct.  In fact as long as your were connected to city water and had good pressure the pump would not start even if the pump switch was on. In other words the pressure from the city water would prevent the pump from coming on.

I never turn my water pump on when connected to city water.  I only turn it on when we have had to fill our tank.  Just wanted to be sure we weren't burning up the water pump by leaving it on all the time.  Thanks everyone.
