We are headed to Yellowstone May 31st for the week.
Any recommendations for that time of year?  It seems if we camp it's nearly full on primitive camping as I have heard that for some areas the showers are up to an hour away.  WOW.

If anyone has gone this time of year, would you say it's too cold to camp in a pup?

Norris seems a good campground as does Bridge Bay,  It sucks most sited don't open until Mid June...but we really want to miss the crowds.  We'll put up with cooler weather for less people :-)

Any and all info you have is welcome!!!

We camped at Bridge Bay last July. It got into the 40's at night but our PUP heater kept us warm. I limited lights to a minimum (just pretended we were in tent & flashlight mode) to ensure the blower on the furnace had enough juice to last the week. I recommend you try for the first loop in the campsite on the outside part of the loop. The campsites are so tight and on top of each other in the middle of the campground it almost looks like a concert. By being at the end of the campground we looked over a meadow that had bison and deer instead of endless campers, towels & rigs.

There are no showers at Bridge Bay but its only a ten minute drive to Fishing Bridge where they have stores, showers & laundry.

We found that we were in our campsite very little with most of the time exploring the park. I also recoomend renting a boat at Bay Bridge but do it in the morning before the wind picks up and the chop gets heavy. We stayed 6 days & five nights and we wanted to stay longer at the end of our trip.

By all means get up before dawn and drive to Hayden Valley for a great chance to see wildlife. We saw bald eagle, bison, moose, a wolf, brown bear, elk & deer. We talked to several people who saw a grizzly but we never did.

Enjoy the trip!!

Oh yeah, one more thing.

We were NOT ready for the mosquitos. They were terrible. I HATE spraying repellant on but it was absolutely required.

Hopefully in May it will still be too cold for them.....

I have a feeling that when we go end of May early June, we'll chance having it snow.  Our pup doesn't have propane heat...so we are really trying to figure out if we want to camp or just rent a cabin.  It sure would save us $$ to camp.

My family stayed outside the park at West Yellowstone.  Advantage was hookups for electricity but downside was not being in the park for the full nature experience.  We were there in July, temps were generally 40's morning and 70's afternoon.  It rained some while we were there so I was glad we had propane heat.  In late May or early June my guess is you will see freezing night time temps.  If you have shore electricity, an electric heater or electric blankets would be all you need but if you dry camp...brrrr.  Sounds great though.  We would go back in a heartbeat but it's a long drive from SW Kansas.  15 straight nights in a popup makes for great stories!!
