Ok, I m snowbound, so here I am!   What have you experienced as a weird camping experience?  One night as we were stretched out on our bunks and just about to doze off we woke up to some very weird human howling!  Freaked me out.  Somewhere out across the lake, someone was playing some very strange music and letting out this weird howling/moaning.  A bunch of us got up and went outside our campers thinking what the h*ll is this!  It was unsettling to hear!!

CamperrooAs most of our dry camping is out in the middle of nowhere (National Forest land) I can relate to strange noises.

The weirdest (and scarry) was a night in the Jefferson National Forrest.

We were camping (pre pop up) in our tent.  Camp was set up, dinner and a nice campfire were already history.  Along abou 11PM I heard a nose down the road.  Louder and louder it got.  Seems a few of the local folks had decided to go camping, and they liked the site next to us!

By midnight they were set up with their small TT, loud stereo and huge fire.  Now they brought out the guns; at least 2 hand guns, maybe 3.  The shooting went on for at least four hours.  Not knowing the targets they were using, we stayed as low in the tent as we could all night.  I can tell you no sleep for the three of us (Natasha was very young at that point).

As soon as the sun started to rise we packed up everything and were out of there.  Not a lot of organization as we threw everything in the back of the truck.

It was a beautiful camping area and I would love to go back, but I just have this bad feeling.................

CamperrooBack in our tent days, we were awakened about 5 am by the sound of a growing number of crows.  I mean dozens of crows.  Shortly, it seemed like every crow for three counties had arrived, but was probably more like 30-50 crows.  All being quite noisy.  They rather suddenly became very agitated and they all sort of moved in the same direction, perhaps 100 feet or so.  They settled down to an uproar, when the owl or hawk or whatever it was that caused them to gather would move again.  Then they would become extremely agitated and follow the poor raptor.  Several times, they centered on our campsite.  Sleeping on a battlefield might have been easier than sleeping through those crows.  This went on at it s highest intensity for more than a half hour.  We left to go sightseeing several hours later, and there were still a dozen noisy crows around the campground.

CamperrooThe eeriest for us was our second or third outing in the camper. We were out in a secluded area, everything was going great. We went to bed, just as I was dozing off I heard a loud noise and it felt  like something hitting the camper in the corner where I was sleeping. To this day I think it was a clumbsy bear bumping into or scratching his back on the camper.Don t ya just love things that go bump in the night!!!!

CamperrooI m a night owl, last one to bed. So I m sitting by the fire, finishing my brew, when I see someone go to the pond and start swimming. We re right on the beach, so I can see the person. Anyways, I walked up to the bathrooms, not gone more than 5 minutes, come back to the campsite, and I realize I m being watched. This guy is in the pond scoping out campsites! Everytime I made a noise, he would freeze. Well, I made it look like I was going to the bathroom again, when actually, I was standing in front of the truck watching him. So he comes out of the water, and heads for our neighbor s campsite. Just as he gets there, I make a loud noise. He runs off like a scared chicken. Found out later he was a seasonal with sticky fingers.[: (]

CamperrooI guess the strangest experience we had was camping at Table Rock State Park.   The kids were in bed fast asleep and the DW and I were enjoying a beautiful evening by the campfire.  We were letting the fire die down when a huge 4X4 pick-up came into the campground with an ATV on the back.  They went down about 5 or 6 sites and started to set-up their tent.  Nothing really strange, but that was before they unloaded the ATV.   They quietly and slowly cruised around the campground loops about two or three times in the ATV and went back to their campsite.  Their lantern was on (bright) and it was pretty quiet.  That s when the park ranger drove around the loop.  It looked quite normal.  The ranger was driving slowly and looking through the sites.... when the ATV campers saw the ranger coming, their lantern was turned way way down til it was almost dark.  The ranger went past them and continued on his rounds.......that was until he made the second round and came flying down the loop doing about 50.  There were three other rangers in separate vehicles also driving fast past us and to the ATV campers.  I still don t know what happened, but the rangers made them pack up and leave right away.

CamperrooWe were camping in a small dome tent when DD was young(about 8years) in the Gunnison Nat l forest. There was a full moon that night which you know makes a tent glow inside. About 2 in the morning while we were sleeping, two small animals, one being chased by another animal, ran up the side of the tent. The tent proceded to sag down on top of us from the animals wieght. This woke us up in a frightful start and scared us to death.
Another time when tent camping in Texas, we were awakened in the middle of the night by my DH gagging and throwing a fit. Seems he was sleeping with his mouth open and a slimy tree frog decided to make a visit there. Talk about gross![8D] My DD still cracks up over that one!
We also were asleep in our larger tent (everthing happens at night!), when the wind began to  blow very hard. We stepped outside to check the weather and hold on to the tent to keep it secured when we saw a cloud line  to the north with a funnel cloud snaking out of it. Oh great! A tornado!. Luckily it disappeared shortly. Found out the next day that it took the roof off of a motel in town five miles away. That was too close for comfort!

Tentcamp

Camperroo[:o]  Our weird camping story was last fall while were camping at our favorite campground in the Allegheny National Forest.  (Same campground as our scariest story, It?s a wonder that we love this campground!)  Anyway, we are there about 10 days and at the beginning of our stay we are awakened by this strange drumming sound off in the woods.  We hear it the second night and decide it is our next door camping neighbors.  We get to talking to them and decide to have campfire together that night as we find out we have a lot in common and we get to talking about the drumming and they thought WE were the ones drumming.  After the neighbors left we were alone in the campground the rest of the time and we spent a lot of time looking in the woods during the day for where the sound could be coming from, checked out the beaver situation, looked like there was no new activity there, the wind conditions were different each night and we never figured out what it was.  The sound always stopped just before daybreak, it always sounded the same and never came closer, we have camped in this site for years and never heard it before.  We still keep in touch with the Canadian couple who were our neighbors and hope to camp with them again sometime.
