I was thinking about upgrading from my 2000 Coleman Mesa to a 2003 Utah. The Mesa is practically brand new, because we don t get to camp nearly as much as we would like. I like the added interior room of the slide out dinette, and there are some minor design changes in the 2003 line, but I don t know if it justifies an added $3500-$4500 expense. Would any of you do it? (or have any of you done it?)

campingeyedocDo you think by having the popup a little more to your liking, that you may head out more?  If you don t get to use it very often but still enjoy the current popup, if it were me, I d save the money...

camphost

campingeyedocWe sort-of did it.  We traded in a used 99 that we only had one season (and was paid for) for a 2002 Niagara.  We really wanted the slide out and we liked the layout a lot better.  But we camp every weekend so that is how we justified it.  It is worth it if it is worth it to your family!

campingeyedocI agree with Camperroo!  If you are not getting out that much then save the money.  However, when you do get to camp and you find yourself " living"  inside the whole weekend, go big.

Quotewould you do it?

i would do it with a fox, i would do it in a box.........oh, wait, dang it i did it again. too many kids, too little sleep [8D]

campingeyedocI would only do it if you can 1. afford to do it and 2. will be able to camp more often.

Gamecock Camper

campingeyedocI bought a used 99 Jayco Quest 10v and used it for one season before selling it to get a PU with a slide-out dinette.  I ended up buying a 2002 Rockwood that had the following options NOT on the Jayco:

 slide-out dinette
 small couch
 front storage box
 Furnace
 3-way fridge
 fantastic fan
 built-in potti / shower
 outdoor shower
 fiberglass exterior
 extra lighting
 4 corner scissor-jack levelors
 Carefree of Colorado awning

..... and the list goes on, but those are the big things.  When our family realized how great camping in a pop-up camper was, we decided to go all out and get a bigger PU camper.  I don t regret getting it at all.  For us it was worth it.  You will have to decide if it is worth it for you.  I think it is and if I had known that the rest of the family would have enjoyed it so much, I would have bought a camper with the Rockwood options in the first place.

campingeyedocThe money is always worth it if you are happy after the buy. Just make sure you are getting something you like in floor plans. We have a new Utah and love it. Now only if we could use it.[;)]

campingeyedocI agree with several of the other posts - if you think you d get out more & enjoy camping more (& can afford it) then go for it.  We started with a smaller pop-up because we didn t want to spend alot of money before we knew if we d really like it.  Then we traded up for all the conveniences & room we didn t have with the first one.  We get out as often as we can & have considered the additional investment worth it.

In fact, we briefly considered trading in for a new Bayside to get the new roof & a couple of newer touches.  Luckily we came to our senses & decided we didn t really need it!

 Enjoy!

campingeyedocI would only do it if something changed in my situation that allowed me to camp more.  If you re not spending that many nights per year in it, think how much extra those nights are costing you.

But that s just my opinion.

GeneF

campingeyedocIt is not what I would do, but what DW would let me do.

Seriously, I agree with Shirley.  If you are not going to use the Utah more than the Mesa, don t make the change.

I have a 98 Mesa and we are down to just the dw and I camping now.  We could trade the Mesa in for a smaller popup that would be easier to tow and handle.

However, the main advantages of keeping the Mesa is that it is paid for and we both like the layout.

Another thing I look at is how much time do you really spend inside the popup.

campingeyedocThanks for the input, everyone! I guess it boils down to money Vs. time spent, and true Coleman green vs. grey. I ll keep you posted. Anyone want a 2000 Mesa for $6800?
