I m thinking of getting a Tilley hat because I ve read so much about how great they are for summer.  Anyone out there have one of these that can comment on them?

TrlrboyWe have a friend who just loves his Tilley hat, he s had others through the years for hiking and driving in the convertible, and seems to like the Tilley best of anything.  I ve looked at them, since I always wear a hat out hiking, walking and a lot of the time around camp, I can t wear sunscreen, so have to depend on protection from hats and clothing. DH & I have hats from Sunday Afternoons, which are better style and fabric for us - they have the best brim I ve ever had, large enough so that I do not get sun at the side of the hat, shining behind my sunglasses.  They have mesh vents on the " dome"  and so are very cool(relatively speaking in the high 90 s), they also make a style which has covers over the vents, for those who need extra sun protection.  Our hats have a back " skirt"  rather than a brim, it can be folded up if you want, and even down, does not get in the way for backpacking - every other hat I ve tried with a large enough brim to shield me from the sun has hit my day and back packs. I have had one other skirted hat, but it was cotton, and the skirt was shaped such that it made me too hot, kept the heat around the back of my neck. I also have a slightly smaller skirted/brimmed hat from Sundya aFternoons, which I keep in the car for around town needs.

TrlrboyI ve had a Tilley ( http://www.tilley.com/home.asp ) for years and love it.

My wife and kids hate it.

It s one of those things that just works. I haven t heard of the Sunday Afternoon brand of hats but Columbia makes one similar with a mesh " vent"  around the upper part. For hot climates, I d consider one of the cooler types....the Tilley does get pretty warm but I ve never had sunburnt ears while wearing mine. Oh, and the part about the hat floating?, it does.

TrlrboyI ve had mine since March 26, 1993 and just love it!  I don t go anywhere with out it.   I wrote the date I bought it in the hat and it s just like new, worth every penny!  I think GeneF just got one last year as well.

TrlrboyOK, you can all give me a hug or buy me a drink.  I got a TC3 at lunchtime today.

TrlrboyThey sure do look like nice hats.  But for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to convince the DW that I just have to get a $65 hat.

GarrettA flats cap makes a good, much less expensive alternative.  I posted a product review in the product review forum.  Here is a link to Cabelas.

Camper Dan

 TrlrboyHi all[:D],

Found out about Tilley Hats from Cajun Camper some years ago and bought a T-3 Tilley hat.  Great hat, very durable, wear it hiking, fishing, around town and camping...been washed a number of times and still looks good.  It only cost me $55.00, back then.

They have some light weight warm weather designs you might like.

Some people are hat people...some aren t.

Trlrboy

TrlrboyTC3 s are still $55.  Got it at REI with a $25 gift certificate I had and a $10 membership discount I had not used.

TrlrboyDon t ever forget about eBay.  They happen to have a few Tilley hats.  Some cost as much as they do on their own website, but a few others are priced to move.  :)

And Trlboy, I think you ll look dashing in that hat!  I can hardly wait to see.  :D

TrlrboyI have to agree with kitphantom that SUNDAY AFTERNOONS are a much better hat.
They do not leave the gap at the sides, so offer far better sun protection.
We have them for all our kids.

TrlrboyMy DH (GSM x2) has had his Tilley Hat for a LONG time.  It has travelled from one coast to the other upon his head.  Of all his hats, it is his favorite and he thinks it makes him look quite eccentric, which he is striving for in his more mature years.  He s almost got it and that hat sure does help.  When it gets really bad looking, I slip the little foam float piece out and toss it in the washer.  I let it air dry and it s like new in no time.  I think the Tilley Hats are like buying Birkenstocks.  You make the initial investment but the product lasts for so long it ends up costing pennies.

Trlrboy

TrlrboyThanks for the comments on the Sunday Afternoons.  I like the comments about the " eccentric"  look... I m going more for the " lunatic fringe"  look.  I m sure I ve made a statement, I m just not sure about what.
