Has anyone been to this dinner show in Williamsburg? It s the only restaurant in Williamsburg that I ve found that doesn t use latex gloves in their kitchen. Due to a severe allergy, my 8th grade son can t eat food prepared with latex gloves. It s SO frustrating for him. Someone suggested the Surrey House and although they use Latex now, they said they d consider switching so I will contact them again in a few weeks. Not sure what he s going to do for the rest of the school trip.

DiWLatex? Around here (Williamsburg/Norfolk area)  they mostly use those clear plastic gloves. I ve seen very few restaurants in the area use latex gloves. I m sure you can find plenty of places that don t. (unless the clear plastic ones are
 latex too???)

DiW

 DiWCliff,
Thanks for encouraging me so I ll keep looking for more restaurants. The clear gloves are plastic. Latex ones are thicker, stretchy material - not see through. The ones that have powder in them are the most dangerous. I called a bunch of restaurants today and everyone of them used latex[:(] No one had ever heard of a problem with using them. In some states (RI, Oregon, and a few others) Latex gloves are actually banned but word hasn t gotten out in VA. The Surrey House mgr was the only one that asked me for some info about it and asked if switching to vinyl would help. It was nice to see someone really listen and keep an open mind. It s just so frustrating for my son. he loves seafood and the school group will be going to Captain George s Seafood restaurant for its buffet and he won t be able to eat anything there since they use Latex. Hoping maybe we can get them to switch but our voice is a small one. Guess there just aren t that many people with this severe an allergy. We ve found that pizzarias and chinese restaurants are least likely to use latex gloves.

DiWHave you checked with the Taverns operated by Colonial Williamsburg?

The Surrey House is one of my favorite places to eat... but you do need to take the free ferry ride across the James River to get there.

You might also check with a restaraunt called " the Kitchen"  located at the Powhattan Plantation resort.

I have not eaten at Rosie Rumpe s Regal Dumpe... although it sounds like it might be fun.

Have you been to Williamsburg before?

DiWBTW, Williamsburg probably has hundreds of restaurants of varying types & sizes, that city is geared toward tourist s. I m not so sure that  by calling and asking, perhaps they are saying that they do use them figuring that is the answer you want to hear!

I m not alergic to them, but I definately don t like the way the smell! I ve used them on occassion for working on the car, and wind up scrubbing just as much to get rid of the latex odor as I would to get rid of the grease....[: (]

DiWBeen dealing with too many doctors lately so haven t been checking the board much. Anyway, let me say I have called (or emailed if possible) many restaurants in Williamsburg and unfortunately almost all use latex (they read it off the box or put me through to their mgrs). Many SAY they didn t know there is a problem with latex or that very few people have serious reactions (so I guess it s not worth their effort). Most were surprised that latex gloves are banned in some states. Some say it s a matter of money, that latex is cheaper than vinyl. I think the plastic ones are probably the cheapest but they don t fit as well so that may pose problems. Several managers said they will consider switching, esp after hearing that the restaurant employees could develop an allergy from wearing them (like nurses, doctors, etc).

Cliff, I did check the Williamsburg Taverns and they use Latex as does the Trellis (darn, I wanted one of their great desserts). The biggest problem for me is this is a school trip so I can t just jump in my car and find a supermarket. We re being bussed around for 3 days. Lo-Dog in Merchant s Square assured me they always use plastic and Aromas in Merchant Square may stop ordering latex (they currently use both types). So at least I can get J some food the day we spend in Williamsburg. We were there last April (camping in Newport News cg) and I know the bakery on the main street was ok.

We worked out breakfast since the hotel restaurant uses latex. J will have boxed cereal (with a milk container) in a plastic bowl (sounds like camping on the last morning). Dinner is still a problem since both places the tour booked uses Latex. My son is stubborn and insists on going to be with his friends so I m hoping I can smuggle in some munchies or something to these restaurants.

I found most people very friendly down in Williamsburg. I wasn t telling them they couldn t use Latex, I just explained about the alternatives if they asked (which most did). The only place that wasn t willing to work with me was Busch Gardens. The class will be spending an entire day there and they use Latex in all food places (under one mgt) and have no plans to change, according to the 2 managers they had speak to me. Since we ll be there all day I asked if I could bring in food for him and I was told NO. They do not allow food of any kind brought in. I explained what a hardship that would be and they said I could maybe work something out with their first aid dept and he would have to go there to eat (away from his group). I truly don t understand their position. I m simply going to wait a couple weeks and try contacting them again.

Sorry, didn t mean to dump all this here. Just frustrating. J s hasn t been feeling well for a month or so and has missed school for most of the last 2 weeks so the hassle just bugged me... This is why we got the popup. It s SO MUCH easier to travel when we can control things. Things worked out much better last year at Newport News (thanks Cliff for recommending it).

DiWDiane sorry to here J is having trouble.  I told my 2 J s and they both said to tell him that they hope he feels better soon.  I will add my get better soon to the others.

DiW

DiWThanks Tracy. Just the same old thing with J (pain, nausea, etc). Suddenly got severe chest pain on top of the regular pains but that s gone now. That incident helped the neuro figure out that the pain he keeps getting in his throat and now his chest are muscle spasms (like he gets in his back) so we may need to increase his muscle relaxants. Since we just doubled the pain medications, I m afraid increasing anything else will turn him into a zoombie. Will have to see coz he s not a happy camper. Other news is the neuro-opthamologist wants to operate on muscles in both eyes to correct 4th cranial nerve damage. All these problems are due to the syrinx that is now inside his brainstem. Just have to keep reminding myself that things could be so much worse. He s mostly upset that he had to give up basketball. His body just can t take it.

QuoteTrellis (darn, I wanted one of their great desserts)

The Trellis does offer thier desserts as " Take out" ... get some " Death by Chocolate"  to take back to the hotel!

Hope things work out, so that you all have a good time!
