Hello, I was reading past PU Times articals and the one on propane safety caught my eye.  After reading thru it, I was wondering what device monitors for propane and gives off an alarm if detected.  Where do you get them?  Are they battery operated?

The OvermansHmmm, the pop up (2003 Coleman Yuma) we just bought comes standard equiped with one.  It s a small white box on the bottom of one of the benches and only functions with the elecricity running.  It emits a high pitched beep when propane is dedected.  It has a mute button for false alarms.  When they were cleaning our PU, they set it off with the chemical they used to treat it.  It s a VERY sensitive alarm, but nothing s too sensitive for our safety!

Your 2002 Coleman came equipped with an LP Gas detector.  It is the white box with the glowing green LED, built into one of the walls.  It is powered by either the converter when you are plugged into a 110v power source and off the 12v DC battery if your trailer has one.

Details of the LP Gas system in your trailer are found on page 33 of the [link=http://www.fft-inc.com/partsbooks/owners_manuals/pdf_files/02_omcole.pdf]2002 Coleman Owners Manual[/link], with specific information on the detector on page 36.

The OvermansYes you have one, located down by the floor.

The OvermansSorry about the post.  I thought that it was a C02 detector due to the hot water heater.  Did not have manual with me at work.  Probably should have looked it up.  Thanks to all for the replies and information.

 Joe,

The LP Gas Detector is actually a good safety device to keep around.  What many of us do is when parking the pop up after a trip is to disconnect the connector on the pop up tongue so the battery is disconnected.

This keeps the LP Gad detector from running down the battery in storage.

In addition to the LP Gas detector, I have added a smoke alarm and a CO detector.

The OvermansIt is a good idea to test these.

They can be tested easlily by taking a butane lighter, strike it, blow out the flame, and then stick it by the detecter.  The gas coming out of the lighter (with no flame) should set off the alarm.

The OvermansMy owners manual says to check it that way every time you set up camp.

The OvermansPropane has a  scented gas right?

Natural Gas and Co2  Scare me..  I ve got my home loaded with gas,  Co2, and smoke detectors...   Not Propone? Maybe I am missing something...?

Have thought about adding a battery  powered " Motion"  sensor... To help keep  honest people from  accidently entering my camper while I am away...
