RE: Spring Break GONE

Well for everyone that I told I would be at Ocean Lakes on March 22, 2003 on site HH48, I can t go.

Even though our School System said they wouldn t take Spring Break, THEY DID. The sad thing is if the State calls for State of Emergency which the state of Virginia did, the schools don t have to make that time up. All they need to do is file for a wavier. But, our school system felt that the children needed to be in school for the entire 180 days, because of the S.O.L. s. In my book SOL s are for the BIRDS not the School Children.

Sorry for venting, it just makes me angry.

Mahaffey-FamilySo take it anyway. Just tell the school you had these plans in action for months and months and your reservations can t be changed. Ask the school to give your kids work a head of time. I use to be out of school for an extra week before or after spring break to go to West Virginia to see my grandmother, school usually gave us no problems.

ShirleyTI agree, if you made these reservations awhile ago, I would speak to the teacher and ask about makeup work. I m sure there will be plenty of other parents who have made reservations for trips and paid for them and won t be missing their vacation. It also depends on the school I realize...my DD s school will penalize them by grade if they take school time off that the school doesn t authorize including taking off the day before an official vacation. That burns me up, especially if you re just trying to get away a day early...it s always a wasted day at school, the kids wind up having a party and they didn t really have to be there!![:@]

Mahaffey-FamilyOur school has a form you fill out for an educational family trip. The kids can miss up to 10 days a year for vacation. We will be using this form at Easter when the kids will miss 2 days of school.

Mahaffey-FamilyOur kids have lost all but 2 days of their spring break. Good Friday and Easter Monday. I have plans made to be in Myrtle Beach, Sc on that Thursday April 17th. I am just going to pull the kids out of school and head on down to the beach.
They are going to make up the last 2 missed days, one this coming Saturday and then 2 weeks from this Sat on another Sat. and Hopefully they wont miss any more days.. I see Spring in the air today 71 degrees.....

Mahaffey-FamilyOur county school system have it in the handbook not to make plans for spring break because they would be used to make up snow days.

They do leave Friday and Monday as Easter Holiday and not spring break, so kids will at least have a long weekend. But we are having to go to school on a couple of Saturday s now.

I am ready for all this messy weather to be over with so I can visit with Jiffy. Because we have bad soil in our yard, can t even go over there without sinking in mud[: (]

I wanted to take the girls and go to MB for Easter weekend again this year, but it doesn t look like that is going to happen now.[

Thank you all, for your good advice. I ask for Spring break off, all I can say is IF LOOKS COULD KILL. It doesn t look like I will be getting it. But, I have decided to take it off anyway. I tried to change my plans but couldn t because Ocean Lakes is full on the dates I have. So for my family it is now or next year.

I ended up getting April 26th thru May 1 for Myrtle Beach, we will be on site HH49.
I did get this time off approved. This will be better anyway because it will be a little warmer . I will be taking the children out of school for three days just like I was going to do after they took our Spring Break.

Mahaffey-FamilyOur school board here in Staunton Va. voted on Monday night to " forgive" 5 of the 10 days that we missed above what was accounted for by making up snow days. We were shocked. This gives us a full week for spring break and I m thrilled! I work for the school system and have a 6th grader and I was more than ready to take as many days off UNPAID as needed to get our week in Key Largo! Thanks School Board members!!! They had already moved the SOL testing dates to later in May so the kids will still get lots of SOL learning time. Don t get me started on the SOL s!!!!!:)
