Ok, we finally went and got our new anode rod today.  I had never seen what they were supposed to look like, all I had was the one that was in SAD shape from our water heater.  WOW did we not have much rod left.  The tip was showing, and then a chunk of white crusted pitted rod in the middle, then the little interior rod right up at the top.

Here s a story for you though.  The nephew didn t understand why the rod was designed to be corroded away.  I explained that it prevents the inside of your water heater from corroding, and should be inspected and changed at least annually.  I told him the $10 investment for the rod was a lot better than the $300 investment for a new water heater.  The parts guy was like " Yeah, last guy who came in for an anode rod had nothing left, and it had rusted into his water heater, when he took it out he broke the drain hole, and he was out $390 for a new water heater."

So there s the facts folks, change that anode rod, lot less investment than the new heater.

startxThe question I have is how often do you check the anode rod of your house water heater???

I admit I check the pop up every year, but not the house????

startxI bought a new anode rod for the first time.  I drain the water out of the water heater when we leave the campground.  My old anode rod was not in too bad of shape, but I replaced it anyway.

Our boiler makes our domestic hot water, so we don t have a water heater.

Most home hot water heaters are glass lined and do not have or need a sacrificial anode.  Some pop-up hot water heaters are also glass-lined and therefore don t have an anode rod.  So if you have searched the paperwork for info on the anode rod in your hot water heater, and can t find it, it may be because you don t have one.
