We just bought a lap top over the weekend, and
I am going to order the  Delorme  GPS to use
with the lap top .Does anyone use this type of GPS?
Any pros or cons,Delorme is also coming out with a
 new model GPS this April[:)]

notrailendsI use a hand held Garmin GPS so we can take it hiking.  Works great.

I have heard good things about the Delorme unit.  As a matter of fact, Mark Nemeth who was a fulltimer for about 5 years used one and wrote about it during his travels.  If you go to his [link=http://bart.ccis.com/home/mnemeth/hints.htm]Tips Page[/link] you will see how he mounted the GPS antenna in the skylight of his fifth wheel trailer.

A little further down on the page you see how he mounted the laptop in the tow vehicle for use while driving.

notrailendsBefore you buy, go to www.geocaching.com and look at some of the opinions about GPS receivers.  This website is dedicated to those of us who have a GPSr and use them regularly.  I think Firefyter-Emt has a great deal of experience with these too.  Most people use Garmin or Magellan brands.
Here is where a topic came up earlier this year:  http://www.popuptimes.com/members/fb.asp?m=2410&key=&language=

I have a Magellan 315, and I just bought the DeLorme Street Atlas 2003 that I will use in conjunction with it.  I was intrigued by the Earthmate and signed up for the email notification when they start taking orders, but I was told that the Magellan will link up to the software just fine.  I don t know of anyone that uses the Earthmate now, and I was wondering if there was any benefit myself, aside from the USB hookup and the very small package.  AS long as my Magellan works I don t think I will lay out the $100 for the Earthmate unless I see rave reviews! [;)][;)][:D] and a solid convincing argument!![;)]

notrailendsThe guy in the cubicle next to mine at work has one in his motor home and loves it.  The notebook s display is larger than hand held GPS, e.g. more convenient when driving.  Down side is poratability, you are not going to take it hiking or on a boat.

I have a Megellan hand held GPS.  It s an older model (second generation), no map on the back ground.  Great for maritine applications where you need a compass bearing.

O.K in the woods, you get a compass bearing to point X, though it may not be the easiest route to traverse.  The overhead mast canopy of the trees effects signal reception, definitely works better in the winter than summer.

Mine can be hooked to a PC and integrated to mapping software, though I have never bothered.  Also have a cigarette lighter adapter to use with it in the truck.
So the up side is that its portable and versitile.

Down side, hand helds are more expensive than the Earthmate.  Also GPS are battery hogs!  I go through batteries in the GPS much faster than with FRS radios.

notrailendsMy dad has used the Delorme combo for years and loves it. He just got a new laptop and also ordered the new GPS unit that they are coming out with. I inherited the old laptop and will be getting his old GPS attachment as soon as his new one comes in. He has a stand he bought that goes in between his front seats in his minivan and the laptop sits up there perfectly. You can have it set up to speak the directions also.

notrailendsI have a Garmin Etrex GPS that I use while Kayaking large and unfamiliar bodies of water. It works fine for what I need it for- Entering the put in as a waypoint and finding my way back to the put in after hours of paddling! I have a GPS antenna that plugs into my laptop, but haven t used it enough to voice an opinion!

notrailendsI use the exact setup you are looking at...Delorme with an Earthmate receiver...for my job.  Right now I am traveling in CA and it has been invaluable.

Pro:  Great real time into, turn directions, resturant and accomodation listings, new 2003 gps loads pretty fast.  Makes for a relaxed trip (..eliminates stress of  where am I and want direction to go? ) to plot your route and then just follow the area as you watch yourself navigate.

Con: Plenty of cables.  I use 12V converter on lighter...plug laptop AC cord into that.   Using optional Y cord for receiver to power receiver off laptop keyboard plug.  Depending on your vehicle placing the laptop on the opposite seat where you can see screen can be a trick...I usually put laptop ontop of laptop case.  Takes a couple of minutes to plot your course and start gps before starting travel.

Regardless on con s...would hate to travel without!
