We are planning a trip to New York this summer.  My family would like to visit NYC, statue of liberty, etc.  I was hoping to find campground near one of the commuter train lines so that we could take the train into the city.  I have heard that the Hudson River line is a beatiful area, so I was thinking about camping out in that area.  Can anyone recommend a good campground that we could use for a home base?  We were planning to spend three nights.

Specifically, can anyone comment on Beaver Pond Campgrounds - Harriman State Park?

Croton Point Park located in Croton-on-Hudson, Westchester County NY, it has a Train just outside the CG that goes right into the City.

This thread doesn't seem to have generated much activitiy.   Pateb, I hope you were able to make your trip and you enjoyed.  NYC is a wonderful place to visit.  The more you know about what you're doing there the more enjoyable it can be.  It can be quite an intimidating experience if you go it without plans.

We have stayed at the Liberty Harbor Marina and RV Park.  It is located in Jersey City just west of Manhattan.  The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are visible from the campground.  There is a ferry located just a couple hundred yards from the campground that will take you to Wall St., and a PATH station walking distance 5 blocks away that will take you to Ground Zero or 33rd at Broadway.  You can easily get on the subway system from any of those locations.

The RV Park is exactly that.  They have 50 sites with full hookups designed for the big rigs.  It is literallly a parking lot, similar to what you would find for the big rigs and trucks at a rest area on one of the interstates.  They have about 15 feet allotted for each site, the dividing line is about 3 inches of concrete imbedded in the gravel surface.  No grass, no trees, no playground, no pool, no nothing except a bath and shower house.  It appeared to us it was cleaned maybe once during our 3 day stay.  We used our porta pottie quite frequently.  Most of the park was filled with big rigs and 5 wheels, but there seemed to be no discrimination against pop ups or tenters.

Our intent in staying in this park was to do the tourist thing in NYC.  We used the camper as a cheap motel room.  Our camping intent and outlook was considerably different that if we were staying in a SP.  With that in mind, we felt our experience at Liberty Harbor was quite satisfying.  Oh, avoid Friday and Saturday nights,if possible (unless you enjoy partying.  There's a bar within sight distance that's open until 2 AM.

We stayed here for 3 nights in late June.  Cost was $60 per night.

Hey all!

I am really sorry I missed this post...  but I'll post if anyone reads this in the future...

The best place to see the Hudson Valley, and also to be a tourist in NYC is the Newburgh/NYC North KOA http://www.koa.com/where/ny/32102/ OR http://www.newburghkoa.com/ If you're visiting the area, it makes a great base camp! They have guided tours on a nice air-conditioned bus that leave the KOA straight for NYC. You see the sights down there (without the hassle of driving in NYC) and get to enjoy camping in the beautiful Hudson Valley Region of NY State. There's a LOT to see around here as well: http://www.koa.com/where/ny/32102/localarea/ Basically, you get the best of both worlds... If I was a tourist to the area and wanted to see NYC while camping, this is exactly where I'd make my base camp. If you're not into their bus, the Metro-North RR station is about a 10 minute ride from the campground, you can leave your car in their commuter lot, and that train will take you right into Grand Central Station. If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line! I hope this helped!

Hi !

I was reading this thread, and was going to post about the same place!
This is the first campground that we are going to in our new pop-up.  We are planning on going Memorial Day weekend, and I'm pretty excited to hear that you enjoyed it.  The KOA got very nice reviews on the "RV Park Reviews" site, and we decided to give it a try!
We have three kids, (9,6, & 4), and for this trip we will not be doing the bus tour to NYC, but we are hoping to check out some of the local hiking.. Any recommendations?  (Looking for something pretty, but not too challenging for me.. oops, I mean the kids! )  :p

The KOA in Newburgh is a nice campground.  They offer trips to NYC.  I live on Long Island and often leave my camper in storage at Newburgh.  Very friendly people and a clean campground.

There's some nice hiking in Harriman State Park, which may not be too far from this KOA.
