First question (without being too technical, please[&:]: what s the difference between a thermostat and a thermometer?

I believe Rob Stafford s photo caption talked about an I/O thermometer.

Armani Bart s said it was an I/O thermostat.  (I hope I have this right).

At only fifteen bucks, it seemed like a vaguely useful (OK...just how useful would this be anyway?) gadget.

If I remember correctly, Rob s was like a square clock that sat on the counter, but Bart s seemed to be more like a strip that was attached to the front of the counter.  Then there s an extra long cord he coiled with velcro...and then he talks about pushing the probe through the tenting.

OK, who s going to straighten me out?  And, most importantly, do I care? Or should I care?  I think it would be nice to know the temperatures, but is it a lot of hassle?

 thanks

sandykayakWell, lets go to the source, the dictionary:

 thermometer
 n.
An instrument for measuring temperature, especially one having a graduated glass tube with a bulb containing a liquid, typically mercury or colored alcohol, that expands and rises in the tube as the temperature increases.

 thermostat
 n.
A device, as in a home heating system, a refrigerator, or an air conditioner, that automatically responds to temperature changes and activates switches controlling the equipment.

So, it would seem to me that the device is an indoor/outdoor thermometer, as it does nothing to help regulate the heat/cooling.

sandykayakI have an indoor out door therometer that I bought at Wal-Mart last year.  It was under $10.  Check out the auto department.
