Do we have any amateur astronomers out there? If so, what kind of scope do you have and how do you transport it? I have an old 8"  Celestron I bought second hand, but it takes up too much space, which is always at a premium. I was thinking of going to an ETX. Stargazers, let your ideas be known!

campingeyedocBoth Meade and Celestron make excellent 5"  Schmidt-Cassegrain computer driven scopes that are small, light weight, easy to setup and use...but could be expensive, depending on your budget...$600-$1500.

I have several scopes ranging from 90mm thru 11" , but what I find most useful while camping is a good pair of 10X50 binoculars on a tripod...along with a good map of the night sky...[:D][:D][:D]

campingeyedoci have a 6 1/2 inch short tube newtonian by orion...its their skyview or quest...shoot can t remember...but i just love it.   dont get to use it much tho, cuz of working and when i am up to it...the weather is bad...sigh.   I have a nice solar filter for it, even tho it cost over $100 bucks it was well worth it cuz i enjoy monitoring sunspots when i can.

campingeyedocI have a Meade ETX70, I like it alot. I have had it for a little over a year. My wife just got me the camera mount kit for it so I can take some pictures with it this camping season.

campingeyedocWe use an Orion ST 80 refractor and a SVD equitorial mount, also from Orion. Takes up very little space and gives great views. Check out great deals on used ones at www.astromart.com

campingeyedocFor all you Stargazers out there! You probably already know about the eclipse tonight, but just wanted to remind everyone!

Starryart

campingeyedocThanks for the reminder garym053! I m ready for the eclipse- got my binocs and a reclining chair and some " refreshment" . Let s go!
BTW I have a Celestron NexStar 8 and I luv it! Not great on space but I make room anyhow. I also have a solar filter for it.
I am secretary/newsletter editor of our local astronomy club. It s loads of fun. You can find out about your local clubs through the Astronomical League - http://www.astroleague.org/
We have been known to camp out at a nearby state park and have public star parties. The best of two worlds- camping and astronomy! Yep Yep[:D]

campingeyedocI m a high school earth/space science teacher getting ready to retire this
year.  In the past I would check out my school s telescope (with the principal s
permission, of course).  It s a 10"  Meade LX 200.  A very nice, serious scope
but two big and heavy for most to mess with while popup camping.  I ll be looking for something much smaller like a Meade ETX-105EC or 125EC.
