We burn a TON of firewood during the camping season and would really like to find some firewood during the off season to stock up on.  I have heard of getting firewood permits for state/national forests, but don t know much about getting them.  We re also willing to buy it by the cord, but have not had any luck finding a source to buy from.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

TheWallRocksCheck out construction sites in your area. My friends and I have collected about two yrs worth of firewood from road projects, new construction, housing developments, etc.
Of course, you would have to collect, split, and store the wood.
Luckily, I have friends who live in the country with a log splitter.[;)]

TheWallRocksIn PA you need to get a firewood permit (haven t done it though).  You get it from the foresters office.  Here is a link for Michigan, but you may not be able to get any in your area.  There are quite a few counties where there isn t any.[:)]

TheWallRocksHow about checking the classified ads in your local newspapers?

TheWallRocksThere is a tree trimming guy here, his kids pickup, split and stack wood. Then they sell it to us. That gives them money, and we get cheap wood. They even deliver it! So call a couple trimming places, you may have a new source for firewood. Oh, and the wood we buy, is at least a year old, so it s dry too. Works great.

TheWallRocksYou might want to be careful with construction site leftovers, as they may have been treated with chemicals of some kind, and could either stink real bad, or be harmful to you or the environment.

TheWallRocksA year and a half ago Fort Custer SP was hit by a tornado and when we were there in November there were still thousands of trees down.  Call them and see if they allow cutting.  When we were there people were wnadering all over the downed part getting firewood.
If you know someone who discards pallets they work great for firewood.
