We camped this weekend at one of our favorite state parks. The people who had the site in the next row over behind us had four dogs with them.  The people across the road from them had two dogs. The people next to them had a dog. The people across the road from us had a dog. The problem was that one  of the dogs would start to bark and it seemed like they all had to answer him and none of the owners made any attempt to make their dogs be quiet. The one behind us would bark for a half hour or more at a time. We felt like we were camping in a dog kennel.  Now don t get me wrong, I do like dogs, but it would be nice if those who bring them camping with them would at least make an attempt to keep them quiet. The one behind us would usually start barking about 6 a.m. so we had an " alarm clock"  if we had wanted to get up at 6 a.m.  Other than that the weekend was pretty nice. There were a few mosquitoes in the evening, it was fairly hot during the day but cooled off nicely at night so it made for good sleeping. Oh yes, and no rain.

rccsWe have 2 dogs who go with us sometimes, depends if we are staying at the campground all the time or going off sight seeing , any way ..... I dont let them bark, first time they do they get the " look"  and told to be quiet, if it happens again they go in the camper or truck. Our first camping trip[ the neighbor had this dog that they left out side all the time, when they went inside to eat/ sleep etc. finally one night the poor dog was just howling away as it wanted to go inside with them...at about 11 pm I finally just yelled hey dog SHUT UP ALREADY!!! the people bought the dog inside and he was " taken care of"  the rest of the weekend. some people just have no respect . We usually only camp for a few days at a time, so we like that time to be relaxing and hopefully quiet..

rccsThank goodness we weren t there or my two might have decided to join the chorus.  I do, however, scold them when they start to bark....tis tough keepin   em quiet when there s a squirrel in the area, though.

Some Fla. parks have designated pet areas or loops.

rccsLuckily I don t have a problem with noisy dogs.  Half the time, people in sites next to us don t even realize we have dogs.

Gone-Camping

rccsI know what you mean! I went out for a one night run Saturday, and the people that were three or four site s down from me (very close sites, so they weren t that far away) had a tent, and 2 dogs. The dogs seemed to bark at me every time I moved around. They tried their best to quiet the dogs, but if I moved again, or anyone else in the area, they would start barking again.

By 10:15pm the problem got worse, their freinds showed up in a smoke spewing old van, with their dogs. Between the yelling, loud cursing, van doors slamming, and the half drunk guy that was driving the van screaming Ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye (kind of like an arabic chant or something), I could barely hear his dogs barking at his freinds dogs (and vs)... After about midnight or so, it finally quieted down over there.

Oh, and did I forget to mention there was a whole section of the campground reserved for a biker group? Harley s VROOM-VROOMing all afternoon & evening. Needless to say, I ll never go back to Jamestown Beach Campsites again!!!

 rccsrccs,

Don t know what state park we are talking about but most of them here have learned that you can not group all the dogs in one location. Dogs need to be spread out within the park to keep peace. Some of the parks have only some loops you can have dogs in which is fine as long as the loop is large and there are other people within the area other than dog owners. The mix helps keep the dogs in line. Dogs are territorial so having to many in one area is not good. Also the owners should be keeping control of the pet. We have two dogs that stay with us and if they hear some other dog they may try to bark back. We cut it short and quickly.

Now, four dogs should not be. I love dogs but four dogs out camping should not happen. Maybe two well behaved dogs, should be allow in the parks.

rccsSorry dog lovers-people with noisey dogs should pack  em up,and leave.Park rangers should ask campers with problem pets to leave, after a warning or two.By the way,we take our dog with us.She is usually very good, but hears about it if she misbehaves.

whippetwrun

rccsThat s why we have whippets - non barkers 95% of the time.  The one will bark if someone comes close to the PU if we aren t near by, the other kind of whines when he sees another dog on our site.  Both stop when told.  I gotta agree the owners of yappy dogs and ones that can t be controlled should be asked to move on after a couple warnings.

rccsFunny thing is that when I camp at dog shows (where every rig has multiple dogs) mine are pretty quiet and don t chime in if other dogs are barking.  Even at 6 a.m. when everyone who shows at 8 a.m. is up exercising and grooming their dogs, they rarely let out a peep.  One of my dogs, Bebe, always shares my bunk and she does like to lay in bed and look out to see what is going on.  I always unzip the canvas a little bit so that she can check things out.

rccsWe were camping last weekend and occasionally as other dogs would walk by our site they would bark at our dog.  He just looks at them so puzzled as if he can t figure out what their problem is. He ll wag  his tail and I swear he grins[;)], but he won t bark at them.  A couple of people in places where we ve camped wanted to know how we ve trained him not to bark...while I d love to say I knew the secret, we re just awfully lucky with this one!

rccsyeah my whippet only barks when he wants in or bays when he wants to chase...otherwise, like whippetrun siad...he doesn t bark.

in Pa at some of the campgrounds they are testing the pet thing...but only a few sites per campground and they are in one section of the park.

if my dog started to bark at the campground all the time, i would have to mussle him, cuz its not fait to theother campers.

rccsWe were camping at Assateague Island National Seashore last week.  Some dog owner allowed his dog to poop on the board walk at the bathroom and then left the poop there.  Right were everyone had to walk to go to the bath room or get some water.  A troop of Boy Scouts cleaned the mess up.  I wish I knew which camper didn t clean up the mess, I would have reported them.
