ok here goes   are you to place the candles near where you are sitting or far away.? some say the bugs are attracted to the smell so you want the candles away from you. others i have seen right on the table next to them???????

jpreiserIt is my understanding that the smoke from the candle is what keeps the pests at bay.  Put one near where you are sitting and make sure the smoke is blowing away from you.  At home I usually use one at all four corners of our deck but when camping, I opt for a screen room.   I really don t find the citronella all that good but they darn critters seem to find me if I m outside a screen.

jpreiserWe have found that it does a " fair"  job of keeping the pests away.We generally try to use the least toxic pest control products and methods available, when we can.Ok for this part of California(where we dont have a bad problem with mosquitos,or West Nile, yet).Regarding how to use it- We burn the candles right on our table. Some people find the odor pleasant,I dont care for it,and try to avoid the smoke.

jpreiserHas anyone tried the off mosquito lanterns?

I m wondering how well they work.  I know they require refills.

jpreiserI don t think the citrolena candles do much.  We will put one on the table now and then just to feel like we did something.  A couple of months back Consumer Reports had an article on insect repellants.  You might want to check it out.

 Happy mosquito free camping,

jpreiserFrom our experience, we had to throw our nasty candle out.   Seems all the bugs in the vacinity flew into it and the wax got all yucky.

Maybe the texas bugs like the scent or something, lol.

We use the Off Mosquito Lanterns at Assateague Island last week.  I had one in our Paha Que screen room and it did help keep mosquitoes from entering the screen room as we went in and out.  The mosquitoes were very, very bad on the island.  There was an oder to the candles when we first lit it, but after it burned for a short time I didn t notice it.  I give the lanterns a thumbs up.
