On the road for the past three weeks I have seen a lot of campers being pulled  on our interstates, some not doing to well as they will never make it home again. So the question is what speed do you think is safe to travel with your camper?

whitestar505I voted " Posted Speed limit No matter how fast" , but don t agree with the No matter how fast part.  I will tow up to around 70.

But, that is based on my situation:

 [ul]

  • Long wheelbase tow vehicle
  • small/light trailer
  • Brakes on trailer
  • Sway Controll in use
  • More than 15% weight on the tongue
  • More than willing to reduce speed due to conditions (rain/traffic etc.)
  • [/ul]

whitestar505I was torn between the posted speed and only as safe choices! Under good conditions I usually tow between the posted speed and 4 mph above that. In any other conditions, it s as conditions allow.

whitestar505If the speed limit is 65 or more I set my cruise control at 68.

whitestar505I change my towing speed, based on traffic and road conditions.  I have towed up to 70 mph when the traffic was light and the roads clear, dry and in good repair.

whitestar505Here in California, the posted freeway speed limit is 65, unless you re an autombile towing a trailer, then it no greater than 55.  We usually do about 60, but I still worry about those little trailer tires go around and around at such a faster rate than our tow vehicles. [:o]

whitestar505I had to put 50 or below.  Have only gotten it up to 45 because so far we have just camped locally, about 9 miles away.  Maybe soon a long trip on the e-way.

whitestar505it depends on where we are at, the traffic and the weather.

whitestar505I put 65mph, but we also tow with DH Toyota 4-Runner and the poor little thing can only go so fast!  [;)]  Actually the speed is only affected when we go up those long hills through PA and VA, otherwise we keep a pretty good clip and have hit 70 before with no effects on our camper.
