I don t know which icon to use for " How crazy is this, anyway?"

We re getting ready for a month-long trip to Canada in October.  For this trip, the AC on the top of our Coleman Bayside is just so much dead weight.

I was thinking that it ought to be possible to remove the AC for the trip.  I d need to cover the hole in the roof (my daughter suggests a skylight [&:]) and the roof would definitely need to not leak.

Would you even consider doing this if it were you?  If so, what would you use to cover the hole?

madroneSorry, but no way.  I am not tampering with that unit!  I love it too much here in the TX heat! ha!

I would think though that the unit doesn t add that much weight.  I ve looked through the slats in our unit and all there s in there is some wiring and a fan.  Doesn t look like it s anything too heavy.

I think it ll be too much wasted time to remove, may damage the unit or roof, and is just not worth it in my humble opinion.

Who knows tho ...I may be wrong.

 Good luck!

 No.

[1] AC is heavy and could be damaged.
[2] Skylight or cover could leak if not done well.
[3] AC could leak when put back.

IMHO, this is something you may not want to do.

madroneBased on what I read about the installation of an AC unit, I would not have it taken out.

madroneAnother vote for the majority, Don t take it out.
It does weigh apx. 100 pounds but the chances of damaging it or the roof when removing it are great. Then there s the expense of a vent/skylight and the installation which means more holes in the roof for the screws to install it. Not to mention the Coleman ABS roof are thinner than industry standards so you have to " modify"  the vent/skylight for the thinner roof thickness.
Also the wiring needs to be " capped off"  to prevent shorting and kept clear of the new vent/skylight.
Then the reverse once you get home.
AC s are not " storage friendly" . They have delicate parts that sort of hang out when not installed that need to be protected.

madroneThank you all for confirming that this was a crazy idea.

Good thing I checked with the experts here at PUT before getting out my screwdriver.

It s too bad, though, that you can t just pop the AC off and on.  Sounds like a product idea to me.

madroneNo I would not ever think of removing my AC for a trip.
