Am in the process of thinking of buying a 1995 Coleman Destiny Pop-up from a friend.  It sleeps 8, is in very good condition for $2,000.  The problem is that my yard is small and I have no place to store it.

My family (wife, 6 yr old and 8 yr old) are planning on making a trip next summer from NY to FL for 4-6 weeks and the following summer out west for the same period of time.

I have been struggling with two questions:

 1) I can t seem to find a cost effective place to store my Pop-up in the Central NJ/PA area.  Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

 2) Should I try to rent a Pop-up for these two big trips and not hassle with purchasing one?

glynnAround by us, near the state parks, there are lots that store boats and campers.  Also, check with someone who has some property and ask for a deal to store on the back of their lot.  Also, check around at the self store lots - even though they mainly have storage units, sometimes you can talk them into letting you use a back corner.

 Hope this helps

If those are the only two times you plan on using your pop-up, by all means rent and let someone else maintain and store the pop-up.

If you plan on using the pop-up other times...say four to six times a year...buy this one.  Storage payments are an issue.  Around here they run about $60.00 a month for outdoor storage, so after two years, you ve paid $1,400 to store your $2,000 camper.  You ll soon find it hard to write that monthly check if you re not using the P/U.

glynnYou might want to check on rental prices before you turn down this deal.  I know storage can be pricey, but a 4-6 week rental on a pop-up is VERY expensive.  I would check the prices, decide how much use I can get out of it then decide.

I second the thought on checking with self-storage places, going rate for trailer storage in Dallas County is about $40/month, but you can find better deals if you look outside an immidiate metropolitan area.  Check with local campgrounds, there are a number of web sites that can help you find local campgrounds, some of them are:

 www.campingnavigator.com and www.campingfriend.com

 Good luck and happy camping!

glynnThanks all for your input.  Some additional information:

I found a local storage facility (self storage per your input) for $40/mo -- 10 min. away from my home and another facility right near my in-laws (3 hrs away) for $174 for the year.

 To rent a Pop-up is $375/wk!  Ouch.

Still confused, but becoming more knowledgeable

 glynnglynn,

    Welcome to the Club!

As I camp locally I have noticed that the privite camp grounds will store your popup. Some I understand do a good job.  Others not so good.  Some charge around a 1.50 a day but it does vary from location to location..

If you buy you may love it, or hate it. So if I were you I would think about renting first. Just remember your first time out with a rental nothing will go right. It takes longer to get ready, because you have to open rental, clean it, pack it, set it up, take it down, tow it home, pop it again to unpack and clean and return. A LOT OF WORK!!! When you buy, it is nicer all around.

Another thing is if you are traveling like you are, Are you going to set it up every night and fold it up every morning?

glynnI would go for the buy.  One of the nicest things about owning a PU is that you can leave it packed from trip to trip.  The only thing I need to pack for a trip are food and clothes.  Good luck.

glynnIf you don t buy it, years from now you ll be saying " I coulda..woulda...shoulda.."

If it turns out that you re not that crazy about the whole thing, I m sure you could get your $2,000 back from someone else who wants to buy a used one.

glynnWe tent camped for years then tried to rent a popup which became a hassle due to getting what was left over & the enormous fees we opted to purchase.  It s been great as Tracy has said w/ regards to having everything you need in the pu and only having to pack the food, hitch-up and go.  I know that storing the pu is a hassle in some areas but maybe contact Dee106 she lives in NY City & has her hybrid off site in NJ (I think) kept on a cg for camping on weekends.  Best of Luck[:D][:D]

glynnWe have the same predicament and made a deal with a friend of ours who has a a large yard to store the trailer.  We are in the process of buying a new trailer and instead of trading the old one in at wholesale ($900) we are giving it to them.  Rental rates here are about $75/mo, so in just over a year we ll come out ahead and we get to see our friend enjoy our old PU.

I know you don t have an old PU to do this with, but maybe you have a friend or family member you could make a deal with.  This couple we know would not take any money and we wanted to compensate them in some way.
