wiininkwewell wiininkwe I installed my DSL myself, read the directions and it was a snap! So I know you can do it too!

Turn KeyWell, this thread was pretty well buried, but I brought it back up so that I could fill you in on my experiences while trying to install the DSL kit that I was sent by SBC yahoo.   My DD Mandy came over to help me, as she feels that Mom is just too " computer challenged"   to do this alone.  I was glad to have her here,  puter project notwithstanding.   So, we placed the disc in the drive and got started, the filters were installed on the phone lines and the next step would be... wait, there is an error message saying that I don t have the right kind of network for this.   We tried following the " fix it"  instructions, but got the message again.   Finally called the 800 number for a tech to help us, and explained how the diagnostic that I did to determine whether this computer could be compatible for DSL had said it was, and that all the things needed were there, including the ethernet thing.   But now, it is saying that I have recently removed the card.   He told me that the capabilities for the ethernet were there, but the card must have been removed, so the diagnostic read the capabilities, and assumed that I was DSL ready.   I told him, I purchased this computer brand new 3 years ago and have never removed anything.   (so now I have to wonder about the practises of CompUSA)  Anyway, he agreed to send me the card I need and I should receive it in 3-5 days.   But, I think that I will call back today, and ask some more questions.   He kept asking about the yellow ethernet cord, and was concerned about the fact that it doesn t fit in the receptacle in the back of the computer, but when I tried to ask what the other gray data cord was for, I got no answer.  I wonder if that cord can be used instead?   Austin, I really relate to your rules, as they always apply to me.

Oh, wait, I just remembered what the gray cord is for, so I know that I still need to have the new card.

Turn KeySorry you had the problems! My kit came with the yellow ethernet cable and a USB cable (I think it was gray). You can use the USB connection if the PC doesn t have ethernet, but the ethernet is the preferred connection.

I m no computer expert by any means, but if the gray cable is a USB cable, then you shouldn t need the ethernet card for that, should you? (Can someone who knows, like AB, set me straight?)

 Good luck!

Turn KeySee, that s kinda what I was thinking, but the guy that I talked to kept referring to it as the data cord, and made it sound like I had to use both of them together.   Did you only have to use one cord?  I may just try setting it up this way anyway, but then..... oh, I m beginning to see it now.   And I did call, of course got a different tech and altho I gave him the case number all he could say was, " yes, we sent you a NIC card."   and " No, there will be no charge."    I really believe that I m probably not as challenged in this area as I think I am, it s just that I m the one that always gets the kit with the missing part, or whatever else murphy s law can come up with.   You know, what AB said.

Turn KeyOK, I had to bring this thread back up cuz I have to tell you how frustrated I am, and also to ask for help from somebody.   Remember, I had to wait for the SBC DSL people to send me a  nic  card.  Well, the card came on friday, so I followed all the instructions very carefully to take the cover off my computer, and pull the back out, and install the card.  That wasn t hard, even tho I was very nervous.  Then I had to put it back together.   That was hard, don t ask me why.   Finally got it done, hooked everything back up, and logged on all ready to start the installation process.  Again.   But wait, I got the same error message again, that I have the network adapter software but not the hardware..   Try again, same message again.  After the third time, I called the tech support again, and the technician walks me thru some stuff, and now I get an error message that says that I have the hardware, but no software.    The technician has me take the computer all apart again and reinsert the  nic  card, just to make sure that it s seated properly.   OK, finally get the computer back together again, and ready to go.   Yea!!!  the puter says everything is fine.   But, no, something is wrong, the installation cd isn t doing anything.   take it out, put it back in, take it out put it back in.   Nothing happens.   Try putting it in and click on  run , nothing.   So, the tech has me go into my device manager and look around.  OH NO, it seems that my M:/ drive has disappeared!!!!  ?????  How in the he** did that happen??   The tech says, " Well, I guess that I ve done all I can for you, see if you can find a friend or someone who knows something about computers to help you get your M drive back , it s been nice working with you, have a nice day, good by."   As it stands right now, i have only C driver, but I swear that while I was working with that tech I had C, A, and M.   Or maybe it was C, D and M.   Anyway, there were three, at least I know that I saw the M listed.    Now I can t run anything on a CD, it won t go.   Can anyone help me with this, Please?

wiininkweThere ya go!  Talking about " nics"  and " drives"  and " cards"  and type strings of meaningless letters!  How in the world is a poor " computer challenged"  jerk like me suppose to cope[&:][&:][&:]?

Sorry, Toni!  I ahave no clue what your trying to do but I hope you have success![;)]

wiininkweIf I were a bit closer I would.  I am a Network/PC engineer but MI is a bit far from NJ.  It may be as simple as pushing the connectors securely onto the back of your CD-ROM drive.  You might have knocked them loose when working on the NIC.

Wish I could help you more.
