I decided to go camping this wknd with just me my DS & the dog.  The DW & (2) DD s stayed home due to my oldest DD turned 15 on Saturday & she was having a big party with lost of screaming girls.  I particuliary did not want to be there & figured the women would have a better time w/o any boys present in the house [:D].

So we are at the CG and on Friday night we were cooking steaks & having a few brewskies, then all of a sudden there is this terrible smell lurking around our campsites [: (].  It seemed it would come & go, we knew it was a skunk but thought it was walking in the brush behind our campers but couldn t hear anything [:o].  Then I noticed the smell as my dog kept coming closer to me, I asked one of the camper friends to smell my dog due to I thought the odor was coming from him but due to my friends multiple drinks she couldn t smell anything.

Well finally others starting wondering & low & behold it was my dog[: (] & he had gotten sprayed by most likely a skunk that was around our campsite.  It also seemed the smell was inside my camper & the dog hadn t been in there so figured it sprayed him around the camper.[:@]  We of course all of my camper friends were ROTFLTAO about my stinking dog.  I placed the dog in a kennel outside the camper until morning.

I called my DW the next morning to look up a remedy for skunk smell because everyone says " to use tomato juice"  but I had done some reading & a scientist did an article that pretty much said tomato juice was a wives tale & only masked the odor but didn t remove it.
So I took a journey to a supermarket & bought (4) qts of hydrogen peroxide and 1lb box of baking soda.
So I mixed the concotion of 1 qt hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda & 2 tsp of dishwashing liguid (ie. dawn).   washed the dog w/ it, then mixed the concotion again & washed him more.  I was amazed that this indeed did work and removed the smell from him.   You have to use the mixture as it s foaming, if you make to much & don t use it while it s foaming then it has no effect on removing the smell.

So I wanted to give this post to those who might had a run-in with a skunk as I did and they will remember how to solve it.  For more reading here is the article my wife used  http://lavplourde.tripod.com/skunk/  [:)]

PopupSgtThat s great information -- I m glad it worked -- all I ve ever heard was the tomato juice approach!!  Thanks for passing it along.  It will be interesting to know if your Aussie is a quick learner.[:D]

PopupSgtThis is by far the best concoction for a sprayed animal I have ever used. I learned about it from our vet about 14 years ago. Unfortunately we have had to use it more times than I can remember, my dog is really slow to learn, LOL!!!

PopupSgt

PopupSgtI hope will learn quickly but he loves to chase cats & ours at home is solid black so to him the skunk is nothing more than that annoying black cat with a white strip down the middle [:D]

PopupSgtWe douched my cousins dog when it get sprayed by a skunk!  [:D] This is also an effective way to remove the smell. With added benefit of what ever scent floats you boat![;)]

PopupSgtWe just used the old Tomato juice remedy when our dog got skunked, then when we got back to the city took him to a groomers.  I remeber it well...it was a long weekend in 2001, I didn t really want to visit the in-laws at their trailer but the lake they re on has really big bass so we went.  Because the summer was so hot and dry, the well at the park had dried up; no running water, so when the dog got skunked we couldn t even rinse the dog or have a shower ourselves.  What a nightmare.  The only good thing to come out of that visit was we decided we never wanted to go through that again so bought our pop up never and looked back...

PopupSgtCorey this may be one of the reasons we leave our dogs at home.  [:D]  We used a product called Skunk Off and it worked very well.

PopupSgtCorey, where did you camp.  Last year, we were at East Fork, and the skunks came up right next to you at nights while sitting around the fire.  Scared a the teens (they screamed) several times and I was waiting for us to get sprayed[:@][:@][:@]

PopupSgtNancy you hit the nail on the head it was East Fork and we were in the back of the " C"  loop.  According to the Naturalist there they are overrun w/ skunks at the park.

PopupSgtLast year, we were in loop G when we had the problem, this year in July with the teens, we were in loop C and had no problems with the skunks -- I guess we were very lucky.  Hope Max learned his lesson[;)]
