to fivegonefishingandadog, yes that s and a dog.  We are crazy you know.  We move tomorrow, and I still havn t packed away the computer and we just decided tonight that we ed like to get a smaller dog for the new house so we went and bout a Shih Tzu!  Don t know what we re going to name it, I know only a little about the breed but she is just the sweetest thing and shares a birthday with my dd.

Well, I guess I should pack up the puter so we can take it with us tomorrow, hopefully it won t take me too long to get it set up again.  If anyone has any info about the breed, sure would like to hear it[:)]

 fivegonefishingHi Tammy,

Congratulations on your new dog!  Your dog s breeder should be able to provide you with information about the breed, grooming and training hints that work for Shih Tzus.

You can go to www.dogsincanada.com (the Canadian Kennel Club s website) for more information on the Shih Tzu. They will probably have a listing there for the website for the Shih Tzu national club in Canada.  Most national clubs have a lot of info about the breed on their sites.  Also go to www.akc.org, the American Kennel Club s site to read what they have about the breed.

Good luck and enjoy camping with your new addition!

fivegonefishingmoving with a puppy?  Sort of like moving with a baby![:)]  I ve wanted to get a puppy for a while, but since having a puppy is so similar to having a baby I figured I d wait!  One at a time for me! Good luck with the puppy!  I m sure she s a doll! [:)]

 fivegonefishingCongrats on the puppy.

Our whole family loves our littlest (10lbs) -- much better than the larger ones who take up so much room, plus if he doesn t move, we just have to pick him up and move him (try to do that with our 170lb is [:@][:@][:@])

fivegonefishingWe had a shih-tzu that lived to the ripe old age of 14.  She was a tiny little thing... so sweet.  For such a small dog she had a BIG name.. Sukiyakikawasakimitsubishi!  We just called her Suki.

She had some of the funniest/weirdest habits.  When she ate, it had to be off of a flat plate.  She couldn t stand it if her facial hair touched the bowl/plate.  Also, every time she ate, she  would spent about 10 minutes smoothing her hair back on her face by wiping it on the rug.  Then she d start to eat.  If a single hair rubbed on the plate, she d stop eating and go back to smoothing the hair down and try again!

She also was very sensitive to jangling sorts of sounds.  Couldn t wear her tags on her collar, would jump at the sound of anyone picking up car keys and hated it when someone would start emptying plates out of the dishwasher.

Also, since the breed has such a short snout, she was prone to snorting.

This breed is prone to collapsing trachea.... it makes them walk around doing this loud snorting honking/wheezing sound.  Don t panic!  And they are also known to have weak patellas (kneecaps) so make sure the vet checks out her knees well.

The coat can get very long and if you want to keep it long, be prepared to groom daily.  Or yo can get her clipped... which we did, every couple months.

These are very devoted family dogs but since they are small, they can tend to get overwhelmed easily, especially by small kids touching and grabbing a lot, so watch for nipping.  My suggestion is to get her used to lots of touching.

And the biggest recommendation I have is to really, really socialize her.  Introduce her to lots of people and other animals as well.  She ll grow up to be much happier and more self confident!

And more than anything.... Have fun with her!  Having a shih-tzu is like having a puppy forever!!  Wait until she s 10 years old and you just finished bathing her!  It s amazing how excited and happy they get!  Running all around and bouncing like she s 6 months old!

 Congrats on your new baby!
