Believe it or not, for the three years I ve owned my popup, I have never had the bearings repacked nor the brakes adjusted. So I m having that done tomorrow.

The question I have is in regards to the lug nuts. They re pretty well seated right now, but after the mechanic takes the wheel off and does the work, then puts it back on, do I  need to go through the whole retightening process like when they were new? My instinct says yes and I will check them frequently, I just wanted to bounce this question of you all.

SactoCampersYes, it s just like starting over. Once you release the torque everything goes back where it was and will loosen up just like when they were first installed.

SactoCampersYES, you should check them. [:)]  I try and check them before every trip.

SactoCampersI recently replaced my tires on the rig(for all I know, they were original). The lug bolt torque ratings are stamped on the bolts, so I had to buy a torque wrench for that. Besides that, I check them before every trip.[8D]

SactoCampersWhen we first got our camper (it was used), the previous owners told us we needed to stop and check the lug nuts between every 100 to 200 miles to make sure they were seated (sp?).  My DH and FIL are doing our repacking our brakes today before we leave next Friday for Disney World.  We plan on stopping about every 150 miles or so to check them  again.  Hopefully, this will fall at a rest stop or some where to stretch our legs and maybe get something to eat.

BTW, the nice people that we bought our camper from, gave us a brand new torque wrench for the journey home (we bought it in Columbus, Ohio and drove to North Alabama - about a 12 hour journey but it was worth it.)

 SactoCampersBrian,

You are PAYING someone to do this?[:o] It is an easy DIY task ya know[&:].  Anyhow,
yep, retorque them just like when it was new....I purchased a  torque wrench just for this purpose and I put red paint at the setting for a quick visual and check mine before every trip....right along with the tire pressure.

Lar, I got two words for you: Time......Desire.

I have neither the time to repack my bearings and adjust my brakes, nor the desire to do it. Besides, if there s a way to do something wrong, you re looking at the " do it the wrong way champ" . I always have to do something wrong first before I can do it right. Not a risk I wanna take with my bearings and brakes [8D]. I can visualize all kinds of little springs, levers, magnets, and screws falling off my brakes as I take the wheel off with no hope of me ever putting them back together again [;)][&:][8D].

Picked up the trailer the same day and the mechanic said the trailer brakes only needed four or five clicks of adjustment, about 80% of the pad was left, and the bearings were dry and needed to be repacked. I ll do it annually from this point forward. It s nice finding good mechanics. Turns out this guy s family has a beach house up in Bodega/Jenner area.
