Jayco Inc. believes it created a new market niche with the recent introduction of its Qwest Baja folding-camper series that is designed to endure the pounding delivered by uneven, unpaved back roads.

The Baja can be hitched to an SUV or towed behind a pickup loaded with off-road toys. The Middlebury, Ind. company believes its Baja line will allow thrill seekers and outdoor sportsmen to access remote areas.

Jayco custom-designed the Baja to allow for extra clearance with 15-inch aluminum wheels, all-terrain tires and a rugged suspension and frame, similar to travel-trailer chassis. Rear stabilizer jacks also are equipped with sand pads to accommodate the extended ground clearance.

Truck-style rubber fenders, a steel rear bumper and mud flaps add additional protection from severe road conditions.

Diamond plating wraps the front and rear of the Baja, including a railed front deck for storage. Jayco also is offering an optional generator, diamond-plated utility box and gasoline tank, all designed to fit into the deck area.

Heavy-duty shock absorbers cushion road impact to protect the Baja interior, which is fashioned after the floorplan for Jayco?s Qwest 10B camping trailer. Jayco also designed a special interior d,cor, including new colors and fabrics, while the exterior is enhanced by a fiery graphics package.

When it s time to set up camp, Baja owners can enjoy ample sleeping space, which expands with the unit?s two pullout bunks. Cooking quarters offer a portable stove, refrigerator and comfortable dinette area.

Other options available on the Qwest Baja include a three-way refrigerator, furnace, screen room, portable barbecue grill and generator. Jayco also has included several popular features in the Convenience Group Option Package, which consists of an LP gas bottle cover, privacy drapes, two bunk end lights with fans, AC prep and spare tire and wheel.

tim5055I am going to have to foward this to a co-worker in Australia.  Its the middle of summer down there so I m not sure if he is home.

He and his family spend their vacations doing remote beach camping in a camper.  They may go several weeks without seeing another person.

He has all sorts of solar panels for power.  The combo radio / flashlight with crank for power.   Eat the catch of the day for dinner, etc.

With a trailer like the off road they may go on a walk about and never be heard from again.

tim5055Hmmmmm. Sounds kinda like the off-road trailer s Jayco already sells  in Australia: Larger tires, beefed up suspensions with shock absorbers, much stronger frame... I would like to see one of the new American versions, they sound great. Wonder how long before they update their American site?

Do a search for Jayco & Australia and their Down Under site should pop up. [;)]

ab diverMy friend in Austriala owns an off road poup trailer from Campomatic (they are a competitor of Jayco Australia).  The trailer opens differently than American trailers.  The pictures on the Campomatic website are interesting.  I have pasted a link below.
