I purchased this interactive 'book' for DS ~1 year ago from Amazon.com to keep him occupied during long car trips & use as a possible educational tool. The 1st unit to arrive was defective, returned, & another was sent as a replacement. Now this unit is behaving the same way the other unit did by not responding correctly or not responding at all. We've changed the batteries several times -- no difference in performance. And, this unit has not been abused at all by DS or anyone else.

Since it has been at least a year, Amazon.com is far removed from any obligatory sense of replacements. I'm wondering if Amazon.com --unknowingly, of course-- just got a hold of a bad batch of units. My intention is to notify the manufacturer as well as Amazon.com of the lack of sustainable durability of this product. This edition of Leap Pad for toddlers is really a great concept. DS loves to play with it & becomes frustrated when it doesn't work properly. The design just needs a few more bugs worked out.

Please comment on this product or any other product from Leap Pad. Thanks!

I purchased this for my DGD, and she loves it.  I admit that I did have to replace it once, only after she decided to take it into the bathtub with her.   It's possible that there could be a bad batch I suppose, and maybe you should contact the company with your concerns.   Hopefully you would still be able to get some kind of recourse from them.

We have had a LeapPad for a couple years I guess.  We love it.  At one time we started having problems... intermittent action, wrong responses, stuff like you experienced.  Batteries weren't the culprit.  Upon close inspection I could see the tip of the stylus (pen) had some funny dents.  Turns out DD had chewed it.  Not bad enough to really notice, just squeezed it with her teeth.  A call to the Co let us know that there are some very delicate sensors and wires inside the tip of the stylus and they recommended replacing the stylus.  It only cost about $5-10, I think it was, and it's super easy to replace.  Since we replaced the stylus, we have had 0 problems.
