I actually came to this forum to see if there was a recipe for Hot Tub soup or stew, but since there isn't I'll tell you about last night's dinner.    DH and I occasionally eat saurkraut, but it isn't a big favorite of ours.  But, yesterday I had a small venison roast thawed and was wondering what to do with it other than the standard potatoes, carrots and onions all cooked together.   I came across a small jar of saurkraut that I had bought to use for Rueben sandwiches, but we ate the corned beef before we did the sandwiches.   I mixed an envelope of Lipton's Beefy Mushroom soup with the saur kraut, added a little bit of bacon grease to the bottom of my crockpot, put in the roast and then spread the saur kraut mix over the top.  Set it on low and let it cook all day.   Served it with wild rice, mmmmm, it turned out delicious.   We even ate all the saur kraut!  Well, not all, there was just enough left to send a container with meat, saur kraut and some rice to work with DH for his lunch.   I'm sure that we'll do this again.

I need some venison!  One of my friends keeps telling me she'll give me some, but so far nothing.  DH doesn't hunt and it's not exactly something you can buy, is it??  Hmmm... there is a buffalo farm here in CT where you can buy cuts of meat, etc.  I wonder if they sell venison?

Andi, have you ever tried any of the buffalo?   It's usually a little high priced, but very good, and healthy too.   Like venison it's low in fat and cholesterol, a dense meat, and rich.   I love it!!

There are farms that raise deer and they can sell their meat.  My DH doesn't hunt either and I always hope someone will give me some.  I was very lucky at the COTOC Fall Rally at Hickory Run SP, Andym86 gave me some wonderful venison.  I couldn't wait to get home and cook it. :D

One shop where I worked the week before deer hunting season was the que to unload any of last years deer meat and we'd have a BBQ lunch with what ever anyone brought in. SInce most of the guys and many of the girls hunted and had filled doe tags yearly we usually had enough to feed an army.

It's amazing what a bottle of italian dressing can do for venison if you soak it over night slice it up and cook it on a hot grill.

mmmm, that Italian dressing trick does work well for venison, but I actually am kind of a purist, like mine just grilled or sauted til nice and brown on the outside, and still med rare on the inside, no marinades or dressings.   Venison should taste like venison, not beef.     Of course, most people still think you have to cook the he** out of wild game, the opposite is true, you need to cook it quickly so that you don't lose what precious fat and moisture are in the meat.  My SIL pours all kinds of sauce over it and cooks it all day, it's the only way she ever cooks it.   When it's done, you don't know what it started out as.   Now, having said all that, LOL, I have to admit that we are having friends over for dinner, and I asked how they would like me to cook the venison.  (everyone has their own feelings about it, so I try to be sensitive)  Swiss steak was the answer, so that's what we are having.  I do like it, but again, by the time it's cooked, you don't know it's venison.

Once I have a pot roast made with buffalo, and it was great!  Unless someone told me, I might not have known the difference.  Hmmm, maybe I'll make that soon!
