I've never had fruit cake so I have no idea what all the fuss is about (how gross they are), but if they have brandy in them, how bad can they be!?  :D

They should have arrested the person for carying the fruitcake. Who knows how old, moldy and diseased it might have been? It could have been the one I received 20 years ago & gave away 17 years ago.The airport security keeps hitting new lows. My mom (80 years young) was detained at the airport for having a small scissors in her pocketbook. Now what exactly did they think she was going to do with it? Threaten to poke holes in their seats?

Last year, in Colorado, a kid was arrested for carrying a gun onto an airplane....well, sort of carrying it. It seems he had a metal toy soldier, 3" tall, who was actually carrying the gun. The security guy said the law said no guns and didn't differentiate between ok and non-ok ones.

Raise your glasses in a toast to those who protect us from the elderly and infant people. Who knows what evil lurks in their old/young hearts! :rolleyes: :Y ;)

Hey, you guys quit joking about fruitcake.  I happen to like homemade fruitcake with the kinds of fruit in it that I like, not what some commercial bakery has done.  And, I annoint it with some rum or whiskey to mellow it up...makes it taste a whole lot better, too.

I didn't realize that there were few out there -- I was always told that there was only 1 -- I have never seen more than 1 at a time :J

I'd like to  extend my sympathies to those of you who have led such deprived lives that you have never eaten HOMEMADE  fruit cake.  Apparently all you have ever had is that store bought junk which is made of pressed sawdust.  :o  (Yes, SAWDUST!  The law says that commercial fruitcake MUST be made of sawdust and MUST be flavored with some kind of sickening sweet chemical of unpronouncable name.)

I'd say that perhaps one needs to live in the South to get the real thing because my MIL was famous for her wonderful Georgia Mountain fruitcakes (always made  right around Thanksgiving) except that my grandmother  (an Illinois  farm wife) and my mother made glorious tender creations that  tasted like  something the angels invented just for the occasion.  Grandma was an old fashioned  Teetotalin' Methodist except at Christmas and then her fruitcakes got heavily  basted with rum.   :J

You cannot get good fruitcake unless it is MADE AT HOME and it must contain tons of  black walnuts or pecans, real butter and Rum or Bourbon.  And dont EVER use that nasty grren and yellow plastic fake fruit stuff they sell in the supermarket.  You need real dried apples and apricots  and pineapple and dates and currents (and    marischino cherries to go along with the pecan halves for the top.)

Years ago when I was in my wife-mother do-it-all-prime, I used to make fruitcake, too, and it got eaten down to the last crumb.  But it is a very time-consumning task as well as a labor of love--kind of like real bread baking not using one of those machine thingies.  There are so many demands made on women these days that few of them  have the time or extra energy anymore to make fruitcake, but if you can find some made by a good cook who has the time and who LIKES making fruitcake, it will probably be delicious.   :XMas

Thank you, NightOwl, for educating the rest of the world that fruitcake is not some kind of tasteless evil concoction and that it is not meant to be used as a doorstop.  I still love to make fruitcake using the kind of fruit I like such as golden and dark raisins, dates, pecan, walnut, pineapple, cherries, apricots.  I call it my supreme recipe. It needs to be made by Thanksgiving and add a little rum or whiskey to give it flavor.

YAY, Nancy!  I KNEW I could depend on you (good southern cook that you are) to help spread the word about REAL FRUITCAKE. :W

Not having  the homemade kind this year made by me or anyone else, I thought, well, maybe someone has learned to produce an edible commercial fruitcake (Hope springs eternal in the hearts of fools like me! ) So, I got one of those little rectangles at the store made by someone  named Benson.  DONT EVER MAKE THAT MISTAKE, my dear friends!  NO joke--that stuff was so gummy and tasted SO PUTRID I had a little slice and threw the rest in the trash..   :(  :o

You just can't buy a good fruitcake in the store.  It isn't the same as home made and it never will be.  The closest to home made is www.southernsupreme.com but they use the candied cherries.    I have a similar recipe and just add more of the fruit that I like.
