I need a "computer" lesson

Ok, I need help from computer savvy people.  I hope I explain this ok, bear with me...except for logging on and posting, I'm not to good at the simple technical stuff.

I would like to know how to create a link to a webpage.  Say it was like a news article such as this:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/01/05/britney.spears.wedding.ap/index.html

(Britney is of course just an example as she is the talk of the town since her wedding/annulment!!)

anyway.... now instead of having someone copy and paste that into their browser how would I make that something someone can just click onto AND....how do I then change it to make it say simply "Britney Married" as the clickable link instead of all the long  //www.cnn.com/2004etcetcetc. stuff

I see folks have these kind of links in their posts to get you to a newstory or photo, etc., and can't figure out how they do it and it's always a simple "see photo here" or "see story here" kind of clickable link that brings you to the real thing.

DO I MAKE ANY SENSE AT ALL - HELLLLLLPPP!!!  :)

Camperroo

hey how did that happen??  My link examples linked themselves??  Now ok, they are links to be clicked on...how would I rename them to something more simple and yet have it bring you to that exact page??
Also, when I do that link thingy myself in an email to someone it never underlines itself, usually people have to copy and paste it into their browser.  I'm so confused!! :(

Camperoo,

It's easy (but not as easy as it was on the other boards). You need to use the letters "url" to create the link. I won't do it or it will generate a link to nowhere, but instead will list the letters which, when typed together, will do what you desire.

1. [ this starts the link
2. url= the second part
3. now put your link to the web here (h.t.t.p://w.w.w. etc) w/o the .'s
4. ] this ends the link
5. Type the name you want to call the link
6. [ start the end of the link
7. /url] ends the link

A link to PopUPTimes.com would be (-'s not used of course):
 [-u-r-l-=w-w-w-.-p-o-p-u-p-t-i-m-e-s-.-c-o-m]PopUPTimes[-/-u-r-l]

Typed w/o the - signs it yields:
PopUPTimes

This should mess up the board! LOL

Or in the reply box, click on the little globe, with the link in front of it. All you do then is cut and paste in the link. Highlight it on the webpage you want, and click copy, then paste it into the window.

If the link thing doesn't work, go to user cp, then options, and change to the standard toolbar.

If you're using IE later versions, it should automatically make the hyperlink anytime you use the www. and name of site with .com on the end.....provided that you have your settings for that.  Once you have copied, then pasted the link, change it/rename to what you want while it is still highlighted in blue.  Works for me, anyway, but I can't see what you're doing on your puter.;) :D

The things you can learn, just by hangin' out........ B, Do you use this with e-mail too?

B-flat

Yes, you should be able to use it with email, also. Copy link, paste in, then rename while still highlighted. It shouldn't be a problem. You did it in your sig line, didn't you? It linked to your page without revealing the "markup language" or hypertext jargon as some call it.  It works for me because of the way I have it set up.

MtnCamper

Ya, I understand the coding part, but I didn't know you could just rename it, and go.......

Gary,

The little moon thing works but doesn't do what Camperoo wants it to do. She wants it to say (and have us click on) "CNN" rather than seeing and clicking on the  http...stuff.

At least on this board the htt...stuff is automatically wrapped around. I remember on the last board that topics became expanded to many pages wide because of people not using the url feature.

Ahhh.... But it does work. BUT you can't use the enhanced toolbar. Standard and it works.

First it opens a window for you to put what you want your post to say, a name for the link.

Then it opens a second window for the script line, http://whatever it is.

So it reads like this... Fox Hill Ovens

Gary,

Well, you were right! I didn't know there was a "guided mode" in the CP selections. Makes it easy to change colors too! LOL    :p

Camperroo

Thanks so much!   I practiced with an email I sent to myself and it worked!!  Took a couple of tries but I figured it out!!

I feel so computer savvy now!!!

You guys are geniuses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and very patient!!  :)

Hey, I'm not a guy, but thanks for the compliment.  I get the idea just the same.:D :)
