We are ready to take our first LOOONNGGG  Distance vacation in our Popup...

In June, we are planning on traveling from North Carolina to the Grand Canyon.

Has anybody been out to the Canyon recently?  Anybody have any good suggestions on where to stay?  Where to go to eat?  Any recommendations would be fantastic.  We are starting now to begin the planning stage of this trip.

We are hoping that the trip goes well.  We are planning on taking 3 days to make the 2100 mile trip.  Does this sound reasonable?

This will be the first time that we have taken a vacation as long as this..  This will be a great test for the new 2004 Dodge Durango 4x4 Hemi!

If there are any PUT'ers out there that would like to meet up for a dinner or a sit around the campfire, let us know..

Have you planned your route yet? Will you be taking I-40 or I-10, any stops along the way? That will determine if the 3 day drive will be long enough you may consider more.

I am assuming you will be going to the South Rim of the Park. Something you may want to consider also. In the town of Williams, they have the Grand Canyon Railway that takes you right into the park to the Bright Angel Lodge from there you can board the sightseeing buses that will take you to the vistas. Their website is //www.thetrain.com I will have to research what campgrounds are nearby.

As far as camping, do you want hookups, do you have an A/C unit you may want to use. Remember you will be in the desert and it is hot. You may want to consider staying outside of the park if you want hookups. The town just before you go into the Park is very crowded and congested.

I would even suggest around Flagstaff or in Oak Creek Canyon along 87. They have several federal campgrounds and it is cooler because you are at a higher elevation. You can make reservations online. Our maiden voyage was at Cave Springs campground, just a little south of Flagstaff.

If you will be doing any hiking make sure you bring a lot of water with you. I hope this helps out a little. Let us know if you need some more info. Take care.
