....there is not really anything that will look right with the stone.

You might consider what a friend of mine did.  He got a rough-hewn piece of lumber about 12"x8"x6ft and beat it up with a heavy chain and some other stuff to make it look old.  He stained it to match his surrounding woodwork and mounted it by drilling into the masonry and using cemented in rebar to hold it in place.  He got the idea from a couple of model houses he was in.  It looks modern and rustic at the same time.
