Then why do so many of their movies either start out without mom...or she dies right at the beginning?

A few examples:

Bambi
Cinderella
Snow White
Peter Pan

And it's not just old classics...

Finding Nemo
Brother Bear

Nor just animations animations...

Chitty-chitty-bang-bang

I mean, there's got to be more going on here than meets the eye...

I am not a fan of Dsiney by any stretch of the imagination and have said so on these boards before, altho that's hard to do as the mother of a 3 y/o.  I am reading an interesting book at the moment, called the Gospel in Disney (or something along those lines).  It's a collection of sermons that a preacher did based on a number of Disney's movies.  It has redeemed Disney a bit for me--but through the eyes of God, not Eisner! :)

This is an interesting thread.  I have lost interest in being a fan of Disney, although much of it is magical and mysterious.  The grandkids really like disney stuff and have been to Disney World.  They seem to like Universal Studios much better and also Sea World, as they are growing older now.

We are inspecting everything so much into the minutest detail, the fun is going away from everything one by one. I don't mean to offend AB, he just observed something, but are we becoming too criticical of everything ?

I opened a new thread for something sort of related ....

Birol, I think Tom's observation was made  tongue-in-cheek and it is unfortunate we dont have an icon for that yet. ;)

Actually, I've thought for a long time that Disney might better be described as "Money-Friendly" rather than Family-Friendly   :(

Ok, I really didn't see his tongue in there as his cheek was hiding it :) :banghead:  :banghead:

I'm not sure of Walt's intent with the recurring theme in his movies, but I am a fan, of the old movies, at least, and some of the newer ones. I like to think it was his way of illustrating that you can come out of very difficult experiences, and still live happily ever after.  I believe Michael Eisner, on the other hand, has taken Disney Corp. in a different direction, not just the movies, and I wouldn't exactly call it family-friendly...I really wonder about his motivation.
