Just spent last weekend at this wonderful little park on Lake Wateree just north of Columbia and about 20 minutes from I-77.  There are 60 some campsites with water and electricity.  Two old but clean heated bathrooms with plenty of hot water and showers.  Many of the sites are lakeside with water access for those with boats.  Sites and interior roads are paved and level.  Lots of privacy between sites.  While there are only a few pull-throughs, manuevering is easy and big rigs will have very little trouble getting around and finding a site large enough.  Fishing is said to be excellent (bass and crappie).  Reservations are a must from March through Thanksgiving.

Reminder:  ReserveAmerica will be handling all SC state park reservations as of 02-16-05.

Thanks Susan! I've seen the sign a few times on my way to/from fire school and wondered about this CG. it's only three hours or so from home.....sounds like its worth a visit. Do you know anything about Sesquicentennial?

Hi SkipP,
We have never camped at Sesqui as it is only 15 minutes from home.  I think most books give it a four star rating.  It is only minutes from I-77 or I-20 and 20 minutes from downtown Columbia and 30 to USC.  Fills up during football season I would imagine.  They used to have a swimming beach in the park but am unsure if budget cuts have closed it or not.  Great bike riding trails.  Hiking trails are OK - they classify as exercise - we prefer the mountains.  Plenty to do just outside the park as the northeast section of Columbia is rapidly expanding.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Susan! Didn't know ReserveAmerica was handling reservations either. Hope this works out well.

Have to give both of these CG's some consideration this year..... always nice to have a place far enough away to feel like a "trip" and yet close enough to home to be there in half a day. The bike trails sound interesting too!

Lake Wateree is one of our favorite spots. We have camped there many times and never had a bad experience. We often camp there with the CarolinaCampers group and highly recommend it.

I don't know about the fishing though. I've heard it said that the fishing is great. But, I have spent many a day flailing the waters of Lake Wateree without catching a bloody thing! He he he! What's that tell you about my fishing skills?

Do you have a favorite spot that you try to get?  We were told by an older couple that spot#11 was nice, but was a big cut thru to get to the place where everyone swims.  Just wondering, because we would love to go there too!
