A sure sign if you're at home you need a little moisture in the air. Central heating tends to dry out the air and that makes for the perfect enviourment to create static electricity. Out camping and grabbing the trailer door quickly and firmly helps stop the spark jumping by giving it "quickly" a larger area to transfer to. We had one patio mat that would cause about an inch spark to jump everytime we went to go in the trailer. Needless to say it went down the road fast once we realized it.

Holding a key or other metal object in your hand and touching that to a door knob will take care of the spark painlessly!  I have to do that a work occasionally when it is really cold.

Static electricity can be very dangerous....in the colder climates, folks sit in thier cars while filling at the gas pump, when they slide on the seat on the way out they can build up Static Electricity, when they reach for the Gas Pump handle, the may cause a spark, igniting the Fuel Vapors....BOOM!!!!. So be careful out there.

That was a constant problem in my old truck ~ not BOOM!!!! just static.  :D   I used to get out and touch the door of the truck to discharge it.  Just got to be a habit.

The new (to me) van has leather seats.  No more static when I get in and out.  It's the only advantage of leather in the winter that I can think of!  :p

The step out of my L9000 is to tall to get shocked.I grab metal before I slide out and let go when 2 feet are on ground.
