Hey folks,

My old GMC Jimmy is getting to the point where I need to consider replacing it.  I hear the new GMC 5 cyl Colorado is a great truck, but the GVWR is only 4000. ONe dealre says this cannot be upgraded, another is looking into it for me.  I am trying to decide between GMC and the Toyota (tundra/tacoma) small 8 cylinders.  ANy input?

I pull a bayside, and am looking at the sequoia, both which have GVWR's around 3700 or so.

Thanks

Doesn't look like the Colorado can go any higher than 4000#. Just went to the Chevy website, and looked at the specs. They go from 3400# for some of the manual tranny models, to 4000# for all the automatics.

When we replaced the F-150 it was a toss up for us between another Ford and the Toyota.

With the V-8 and  automatic you can get up to 7,100 lbs towing capacity (unless you need the double cab, which drops you to 6,500 lbs).

Had we not been thinking of possibly going with a FFT Caravan, the Toyota probably would have been the one.  I have been very happy with the fit/finish and repair history of other Toyota products I have owned.

LCMS paster,

You might want to look at the GMC Envoy. Horsepower is much larger than the old Jimmy. Will tow up to 6,000 lbs.

Can you pony up for a V8 Tundra?? That would be a much better choice and will tow a lot better

LCMS paster,

Or get a V8 Envoy.

LOL on the envoy/toyota debate...

THe 5cyl has on option I really like 45 inch legroom. ( I am 6'3" 280) whereas the toyota is much shorter, as is the envoy.

Of course,. I suppose I could get a smaller popup....

Has anyone seen any reviews on the newer high wall fleetwood (sequoia) or the starcraft competition?

If I recall correctly the HP was 220 on the GM truck you are talk about. Will this be enough?

Just to change the subject completely---I vote for the Dodge Durango! ;)

I had a 6-cylinder 1999 Jeep Cherokee with a dealer-added Mopar hitch (no towing package) when I bought my Utah. The Jeep could pull the PU, but it wasn't really happy about it. (And I wasn't happy with the way the brakes chattered when I tried to stop or slow down on a grade.) Traded for a 2003 Durango with V8 (but no Hemi  ;) ) and full towing package. It tows so well I have to look in the rear view mirror sometimes to make sure the PU is still back there. LOL!!

Don't know too much about GM or Toyota--never owned either one. (I looked at the Trailblazer when I was getting ready to trade the Jeep, but the Durango had way more towing capacity.) I vote for whichever one has the best towing capacity. It definitely makes a difference!!

Or how 'bout a Grand Cherokee V 8 ?  Just bought an 01 Limited with 4.7 V8 and factory tow for 15k.... only 43000 miles..... 80000 powertrain warranty along with 3000 bumper to bumper.  Boy, what a difference from our old V6 van....... I believe it is rated at 5500.

I would just look for one which could tow over 10,000 lbs. Eventually, you'll decide you want something other than the Bayside and it's better to already have the tow vehicle that can handle whatever you want to get. Forget the 75 or 80% rules. There's nothing like having overkill power when going up hills.

I agree with that statment. Brand name is not the point but how much you can tow.
