Well, the ax fell yet again for another guy...except this time it wasn't "spin the wheel Friday" as the guys were starting to call it, because every Friday for several weeks someone has been let go, today is Thursday and they let go another guy who'd been with them for several years.   Poor guy, he said he was actually prepared because he's known with all the layoffs each week that he wasn't taking any chances and had already made some contacts, so he was glad of that, but furious about how the company is being so callous towards the employees.  He was gracious enough to come to stop by some of the sites to say goodbye and goodluck to the other guys.  Then the company announced today that tomorrow they are hosting an afternoon barbeque for employees.  Everyone is nicknaming it the "Survivors Barbeque" though some have quipped they'll probably have lit torches there and sometime during the cookout, they'll snuff out yet another person!!   :eyecrazy:  Oh well guess when you don't know if you are going to have a job from one week to another you have to have a sense of humor!!

That is so true about not knowing from one day to another if you will have a job.

DH works for a textile company.  Although they are still in good shape right now, you never know.  Just wonder from one day to the next if you will have a job.

Very difficult situation workign at a company laying of people .... I hope they are finished with it for the foreseeable future.

As I sit here alone in my part of the company, I know what it's like to not get cut.  About half of my company was laid off a little over a week ago by the competitor that bought us.  While it's horrible to not have a job in this economy, it's not all that easy to be the few left behind to do all the work either. The only saving grace right now is that their HR people aren't all over the place anymore and most of the other managers are not here.

Keep your chin up, hope for the best, prepare for the worst and you'll make it through this somehow.  At least, that's what I'm telling myself everyday I come to work and none of my friends are here anymore.

A Bar-B-Que huh?  I wonder how much $ they are shelling out for this shin-dig.  Probably enough to pay one or two of the layed off guys salaries for one more week.  Grrrr.

ahh, you're right on it!  We just though the barbeque was a joke considering they've been letting so many people go.  But you are so right in asking what did they probably shell out for it?  My DH said the people there were very uncomfortable because here the company was doing something that under normal circumstances would be a fun company event but instead it felt very weird, especially know they'd let this other poor guy off on Thursday...you think they would have at least let him work till the barbeque!   Probably one less mouth for them to feed though!!

So we're hanging on through another week...perhaps there'll be no layoffs this week...the guy who works with my husband is a wreck worrying about it and constantly worrying every week if he's next.  DH already saved him once, because he heard they were going to let him go, but he's my DH's helper, and he told mgmnt, if he goes, I go.  Since they aren't ready to let my DH go for some reason, they kept his helper!  These guys are all pretty much looking for other positions, but construction/residential is hitting a slow down around here and there's a lot of guys looking for the same work and some aren't in the position to move out of the area as we are, so I feel for them.
