we are going to be doing the tourist thing in Williamsburg next sumer and have decided to stay at one of the Koa's. Which one is better is terms of wooded/ private sites, proximity to the attractions?

Gone-Camping

Ummmm.... Niether???

I live here in the area, have camped in almost every campground in the area. I've been to the two KOA's but haven't camped there, there are better places! If you're looking for a really nice woodsy place with water & electric, try Newport News Park, big roomy site's, very well seperated (not lined up like sardines in a tin), low price compared to the KOA's as well at only $18 per night. The campground sit's right on the Williamsburg/Newport News city line located at exit 250-B on I-64...

Next best place (full hook-up's and swimming pool available) is American Heritage Campground...

Hi,

Thanks, this information is very helpful. I think Newport News Park looks great, my only remaining questiona are do they allow campfires? How far in advance do they fill up?

It would be great if I could find infomation like this on the national campgrounds in the OBX National Seashore. I have been on my computer every night, and posting everyehre I can trying to get info and pictures on Frisco and Cape Point both - both national capmgrounds, but the infor is hard ( if not impossible to find)

You have been a tremendous help on the KOA question, and probably saved us money. It is amamzing how wooded they can make ther sites look on there websites..................once again, it shows the imense valuae of wesites/message boards such as this one!

Thanks again!!

Newport News Park does indeed allow campfires, and from what I remember they are not real particular about it, no fire rings etc... just find a nice place and light it up!

American Heritage by contrast, does allow campfires, but they will bring you an old clothes dryer barrel to use as the fire pit, and they will also deliver wood to your campsite.

Funny you should ask about the NPS campgrounds, I was down there last weekend. I stayed at Ocean Waves Campground but we traveled south to Frisco to utilize the beach. We accessed the beach by the Billy Mitchell Airport just beyond the Frisco Woods Campground. Right there at the end of Billy Mitchell Rd is one of the NPS campgrounds. I didn't go in, but can tell you this much. You'd be camping amongs the dunes, no shade to speak of, no hook-up's, and no campfires allowed (you can build fires on the beach below the high water line). Quite frankly, if I was going to be staying down there, I'd either go to Ocean Waves, or if I wanted to stay that far down the island, I'd utilize Frisco Woods...at least you'd be able to have an electric site and utilize the A/C (if ya got one)...

BTW, there are no open wood-burning (campfires) fires allowed on the island, except below the high water line on the beach.

Hi,

Funny you should mention Ocean Waves, I saw your earlier posts on them, and the great information on whaich sites are shaded etc. I caled them to find out about how/when to make reservations and the lady whom I talked with gave me the info but then said "they could not garanatee any partuicular chioce. So, I am thinking if this is the case and I could have an open sitein the sun, I may as well as well head for the hills ( or in this case dunes) for a bit more privacy...........and a campfire on the beach.

Thanks for the tidbit on Frisco NPS. Close to an airstrip.hum, wonder if we will hear planes ?

These pictures are about five years old and don't do the place justice. There are some nice shaded sites at Frisco woods, but it's all sand underneath of you... (first two pictures are Cape Woods same area)

As for Ocean Waves, they usually do guarantee site's, but even last weekend when we showed up, they had us in site's 63 & 62...we had reserved 9 & 19 which back-up to each other. When she found out it was me she changed them out, but the people that got our site's didn't want them anyway, the tree's were in their way...imagine that!

At any rate, I'd take a chance on them, one thing I've noticed is that site's 23, 24, 25 & 26 (shaded) are among the last to be taken, they have the smallest concrete pads, and the tree's make it hard for the big rigs to get in there. Site 24 was open nearly all weekend for Labor Day!

Hi,

I was looking at Newpoet news on the map and wondering how far it is from virginia beach? from williamsburg area we are going to First landing, would it make more sense to just go to First landing and "communte for a few days? Rather than set up for three days and move?

Loaded question!

The commute under perfect conditions are only about 45-60 minutes. However, with traffic through the tunnel, I-64 between Newport News and the tunnel under construction, and the normal/daily tunnel jams, you could be looking at typical tunnel jams that will leave you sitting there for an extra half hour to an hour. I've always recommended splitting the trip, just too much to do in each area, and too much of a problem trying to commute between the two.
