Storm Leaves 9 Injured at N.H. Campground
By ERIK STETSON

HAMPTON FALLS, N.H. (AP) - A powerful storm ripped through a family campground, trapping campers under downed trees and injuring at least nine people.

Police said the narrow, localized thunderstorm cell caused extensive damage at the park. ``It was pretty fierce here,'' Fire Chief Jay Lord said.

He said it took about an hour to free one camper after a tree landed on his trailer.

``People were just screaming,'' said Rebecca Duclos, a Manchester woman who was staying with her husband and two children at the Wakeda Campground on Route 88.

Duclos said it was ``pitch black'' after the storm had passed late Friday. Power lines and trees were downed at the campground and along the roads leading to it.

Josh Grant, of Newbury, Vt., said his parents were hospitalized after a tree crushed their camper. He said both were conscious when reached by rescuers, but were pinned and impaled by branches.

According to its Web site, the Wakeda Campground has 400 camp sites and cabins over 180 acres, not far from New Hampshire's seacoast.

The Red Cross also opened a shelter at the Lincoln-Ackerman School for people whose campsites were seriously damaged.

I saw some pictures of it on the news last night. Looked rough. I know a fiver, a seasonal tt with deck and a PU were pretty much totaled by it all. It looked like the front end of the fiver was crushed under a tree that must have been every bit of 2 feet in diameter, if not larger.  The PU was mangled, it took me a minute to recognise it for what it used to be.

That has to be the only down side to a heavily wooded cg.

Our prayers go with these people too.

A father and son were in a PU there that had a tree fall on it.  Thank goodness they were at the opposite end from where the tree fell.  It took them an hour to get them out. :)

We drove through an area on the way to Wells Beach about 1/2 hr to 3/4 hr after a tornado hit near the Acton. ME area! It looked pretty bad ahead of us, but thank God, it was okay when we drove through.
These reports bring it all close to home as we live less than 1 mile from the town of Newbury, VT.
It was a pretty rough weekend for Southern Maine and the NH seacoast. We slept and/or spent more time in our jeep than we did in the pop-up the first 24 hours in Wells!!!
