What about upstate NY... Cooperstown, catskills, etc.?  Anyone have any suggestions for CGs with W/E hookup?

GeorgeNow, to us New Yorkers the word " upstate"  means lots of different things. Those of us from Albany north think of the Catskills as " downstate"  Those folks in Malone and Plattsburgh think of Albany as " downstate" . Those folks in the city think Yonkers is " upstate" .....

 You get my drift....

Catskills- the only place I ve been is North-South Lake in Haines Falls NY- state campground and we ll be heading back as soon as we can make the time...

Adirondacks- wow! take your pick- state campgrounds with huge sites. There are also nice private places here and there, with hookups.

It all depends on what you and your family like to do and want to see...

GeorgeDW grew up in a small town called Sherburne... want s to return the end of the summer... DS and I want something to do other than stare at buildings in a small town in upstate NY.  Anything that has a biking destination would be nice.   We were also thinking of cooperstown.

GeorgeOut toward Lockport NY is a restored part of the Erie Canal. I don t know if they have turned the Tow Path into biking trails out that way, like they did near Amsterdam, NY. Although there is nice biking out near Amsterdam, there isn;t much else to do. I haven t gotten out to Lockport, but it looks interesting.

Cooperstown not only has the Hall Of Fame, but the Farmer s Museum is nice too. Oneonta isn t a terrible ride from Cooperstown and I believe the Soccer Hall of Fame is there, if you would find interest in that.

We haven t camped out that way, yet, other than Letchworth State Park, which is awesome, but has only electric hook ups. We re also looking into Watkins Glen, which is a cool walk, but really crowded when there s a race.

(DH s employer has dispatching from Sherburne, at the phone company, but I m not aware of what else is around there).

 Check out:

There s even a place you can put in your preferences and find campgrounds:

 http://www.iloveny.com/search/accommodations_camp.asp

You can also order the tourism book. They list some private and all the state parks in it.

Oh, I forgot- if you want some mountain biking, try Minnewaska State Park. There s a beautiful lake that is only accessable by trail. The trails are old carriage routes and are a nice mix of cinder, dirt and some rock. There are rattlers in the area- we saw one on the trail, so be aware.

We had stayed at the Jellystone Park in Gardner- pricey, but full hookups. Lots to do for the kids. There s a skydiving place close to the campground too and a rail to trail bike path that is rather nice (Wallkill Valley Railroad Company Trail- short, only about 4 miles long)- very underused- awesome bridge at the end.

This is right near Sherburne. It s an environmental education center.

kathybrjOther things to see and do in/near the Catskils include [link=http://www.howecaverns.com/main.htm]Howe Caverns[/link] (and several others).

Farther west, someone mentinoned Letchworth SP.  That is worth a drive.  It is a remarkable place with three spectacular waterfalls (at least one is taller than Niagara Falls).  [link=http://nysparks.state.ny.us/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/nysparks/parks.cgi?p+108]Whetstone Gulf[/link] is also worth seeing (uh, if you re not afraid of heights, that is...the trail is very close to the edge with no rails and a very steep drop).  I ve never camped there, so I don t know about the facilities.

If you go north from Albany, the Lake George area is popular.  Search here for Lake George and you ll get a number of campgrounds & other activities.

GeorgeAnd if you chose Lake George, try the Lake George RV Park. I always have a great time there.I stay at least a week, and never run out of things to do.

 GeorgeGeorge,

I have never been here but if we all do not go somewhere new to camp we would be kind of short on review write ups. Give it a shot. Web site looks good.[;)]
