Well awhile back I posted that DH was in a job where folks were getting laid off at a rapid rate, essentially every Friday for the last few months the next guy/gal would go.  We figured he'd be let go as he was one of the newer guys but they laid off everyone around him but him!!  DH opted to bide his time with this job (that does not mean he didn't apply himself, he did his job but he wasn't out looking for an employee of the year award) as we've made plans to go to FL (which now have me a bit scared with these hurricanes, but that's another problem!) however, he finally had enough of watching these other people be let go with no notice, it really bugged him that they had such little respect for the effort these people had given to the company over the years, so this Friday he left himself go...yup he quit.   :yikes:

He feels great about his decision, and he's been making contacts the last few weeks about other work and got jobs lined up for himself.  So he's back working for himself!!  His now former employer said they'd have no problem having his bid on jobs as a subcontractor now....go figure....they are an odd group!!!  For now though he's got his own projects set up.   Others at the job said he was crazy not to wait till he got laid off so he could collect unemployment and then do work on the side but he just wasn't comfortable with doing that and would rather control the situation himself.  So we are now back on the fun roller coaster ride of self-employment!!!  Though hubby feels pretty positive so I'm going to go with those feelings and see where it takes us!!!!

I hope our FL friends are all safe and well.  I know storms can hit anywhere...have to admit this round of storms has me a bit anxious about our possible move.   Though at least they get warnings ahead of time to evacuate unlike the earthquakes we got in CA...no warning just a whole lot of shaking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations to your husband. Even though I don't know what he does, it sounds like he has a trade. I've been self employed for the last eight years and although it's been difficult at times. We always seem to come through them. At this stage of the game I don't think I can work for someone else. I'd do whatever it takes to do it on my own(sell hot dogs, clean bathrooms, wash windows, clean cars, whatever but do it better than the next guy) it takes hard work, faith and most of all make it fun. I have 17 employees and I make sure they know they don't work for me but for themselves,as long as they produce we all survive. It's not easy but it sure feels great.

As far as Frances we've been honkered down since Friday, it's not been to bad here. It's no Andrew for sure. Some 60 to 70 mph wind and basically little rain till now, although it's pouring right now.

Hope all goes well for your husband and his new endeavors.

thanks Papaso, yes he's in residential construction.  He's a finish carpenter and specializes in custom work like fireplace mantels, custom trim and moldings, built-ins, and his higher end projects are kitchen and bath cabinetry installations for new construction and remodels.  While working with this company he met several design firms and homeowners who liked his work and told him he should go back out alone, concentrate on just his specialty vs. taking any remodeling job that comes down the pike, and he'll get his name out there for the specialty work instead. So he bid on some of these kithen installation projects for new homes and won the bids.  When we get to FL he hopes to set up the same type of business.  So we'll just cross our fingers and toes and hope things go well.

Now that I think back I remember another post about your move and your husbands trade. When are you planning to make your move to our warm weather. BTW it's a beautiful sunny day down here right now.

We're anxious to get down there, but our home here is still under construction having an addition added on.  If it drags out to long into fall we will have to wait until Spring to put the house on the market.  I was hoping to not have to go through another winter here!!  We are looking forward to the change.  Spoke to family member down in the northern Tampa area and she said they've mostly had wind and rain, and no power outages with the tropical storm now.  She's glad it wasn't anything worse, but then again, as she mentioned we could get nailed with a monster blizzard here this winter or even a hurricane itself this Fall. You just never know what the weather is going to do where you are, which is why these unfortunate rounds of hurricanes down your way haven't changed our plans to move to FL!  I will however, purchase a good size generator once we get down there and if a storm looks severe enough we'll heed warnings and head up north instead temporarily!

Rose, it takes courage (and a wise, encouraging  wife) to do what your DH has just done.  And it also takes  knowledge, faith,  and self-confidence to know that  one's talents are equal to the challenge.  It sounds like he is going to do very well and he made a good decision.

One thing he might like to do as he finsihes a job is to make sure he gets a written  record-letter of reference  from each client of their satisfaction with his work.  This way when you move, he will have a stack of referrals he can show to prospective employers or clients.  He might even want to make up his own form letter for  people to fill out and sign as a project is completed.  It is much easier to get these things right at the time than at some date in the future.

As or the move, just hang in there, kiddo, your time is coming! :# :)

And as for the weather  problems now in Florida, as you and  others here have wisely observed,   no matter where you live, no climate is perfect and you always have to deal with the complications of weather and terrain.  It is always a trade-off!  :W

Elisa, thanks for your kind words!  I'm proud of my DH, we've had a tough year, but he's always stayed positive.   I'm so sorry for the difficulties FL has been experiencing and may yet experience again, but we look forward to living there and welcome the change.
