After a much too long break the kids and I are finally going camping this weekend!  WAHOO!!!

We're meeting up with 2 other families, so the kiddos should have plenty to keep themselves entertained and mom may actually get to sit 'round the campfire and talk to other growed ups!

Have the electric blanket packed and will make sure the propane tank is full to run that little furnace.

Any good cool weather camping tips?

I have a very nice green one that says PUT on it.  I just can't figure out how to get it around my coffee mug!   :p

Kelly,

So glad to hear that you and the kids are going to get to get away!  I know what you mean by looking forward to actually getting a chance to sit for a bit and chat with others who don't constantly ask "why?" :D

Out here is So Cal where it gets so cold, we like Baileys and coffee around the campfire.  That seems to keep us warm.  ;)  Whatever you do, have a marvelous time!!!

If you stuff something (we use beach towels) in between the bed frameand the tenting it helps to cut the amount of cold air coming into the PU. :)

Try puting a blanket down under your bottom sheet...it helps keep the cold from your back and you are warmer.

I have an electric heater I use. If I'm paying for electric then I use the heater before the frunace or in conjunction with it.
That being said, you have to weigh the safety of having an electric heater in the camper with kids dropping things possibly in front of it or on it.

I keep a sleeping bag underneath my bottom sheet and on top of the mattress,  this in conjuction with a sleeping bag over the top pretty much keeps sleeping accomodations nice and toasty in really cold weather. I don't particularly care for sleeping inside a sleeping bag,  too restrictive and not comfortable for me.

Another thing I have done is take two single size blankets and drape them up over the frame on the bunkend (after putting in the shepard pole,  that will hold the blankets in place) and let them hang all the way down to the bunk to create a "surround effect". Then when I set up, I drape them around the sides and pin them to the curtains where they meet the roof.  This pretty much keeps the heat that the furnace produces inside the bunkend where it can do the most good.  If you have lots of old blankets to use,  you can pretty much easily cover all your tenting material and use them as a form of insulation in really extreme cold temps. Thus keeping the heat inside the trailer instead of escaping quite so easily through the tenting material.

I know the feeling.  I just recently purchased a camper in September and have gone twice and have 2 more trips planned by Thanksgiving.  We had to evacuate for Hurricane Ivan and went camping in Tyler, Texas.  That was really nice unscheduled trip.  In 2 weekends the kids and I are going to Flint Creek in Wiggins, Mississippi.  For Thanksgiving week (I work at a school) we are going to Yogi Bear for the whole week.  Santa will be there one of the weekends.

Can't wait.

Have fun this weekend.

Kelly

Thanks!  The weather here is s'posed to be awesome and we should hit some really good leaf color.  Really looking forward for a chance to get away!

I got two tips for you Kelly.

[list=1]
  • If it's windy, pull the cushions off the dinette and such and tuck them around the side of the beds.  Amazing how much difference that can make.
  • And if you have Popup Gizmo covers, use them too to trap heat in.
Have a great time.

It seems like just about a year ago this week we met you.  Hmm, that night we were in a motel room as rain then snow fell outside.  I guess that would be tip #3.  Carry a VISA card just in case.

So, "Have a great time." isn't a tip?  ;)

WOW!  I do believe you are right about the timing of when we met.  Amazing how fast the year has gone!

The VISA card is packed ... maybe I'll use it to get me to California one day!
