Haven't actually camped here, so I can't give you my firsthand opinion, but I live very near, so I've seen it many times and been there for day trips.  There are hookups.  It is right on the beach, between the street and the water.

Personally, I wouldn't want to spend my Thanksgiving there because you are right at the very end of the South runways at LAX  and you will have airplanes taking off right over the top of you all day and night.

I believe it's fairly clean; It's a County facility, not a State, and there are flush toilets and hot showers, according to "California Camping."  The phone number for reservations is 800-950-7275.

Maybe someone who's actually camped there could give more detailed infor.  We've only gone there for the day or for an evening campfire (which is allowed, since it's on the beach!)

Sorry, that last post was me!  Didn't realize I had been logged out!

Hi.  I grew up in Manhattan Beach...know Dockweiler well.  It is basically a parking lot where you camp.  The beach is beautiful (can be a bit smelly depending on the breezes from the oil refineries in El Segundo).  Umm...I don't know about Thanksgiving weekend...if you just want to go to the beach, ride bikes on the Strand, maybe cruise the "scene"-Santa Monica Pier/Venice...it could be fun.  But, it is not really a "camping" experience type of place.  Also, please remember, it is colder down at the beach....especially in November.

Good luck!

Sue,
I've got to ask, Why?
(I lived close enough to have never camped there)
If you're down in San Diego, you've got better beachside
camping. If you've got friends/family to visit, well, then maybe.

On one side of Dockweiler is LAX- a plane every two minutes from 6:00 AM to Midnight.  A water treatment plant to the north and oil refinery up the road.  Good hang gliding nearby, nice bike path. In the winter, I would not venture into the water due to the water treatment plant's history of having a discharge on just about every rainstorm. For the better side of the story see:

If you don't need hookups, go a bit further north into Malibu. Decent state beach/parks. Malibu Creek is my favorite in this area.  It's 15 minutes inland and has a nice wooded park somewhat similar to Vail Lake...

There is a private CG in Malibu with hookups. I've never been.

Hope this helps,
Carl

SCCampers has camped here twice, the most recent being this past Memorial Day weekend. It overlooks the beach and the line of pop ups on the SCCampers home page is taken from our first rally at Malibu. The sites are somewhat close together, which wasn't so much a concern since we all were together anyway, and Malibu doesn't allow campfires, but other than that, we've had great times when we've gone to this cg.

Here's the thread from when we went this past Memorial Day. Some of the later posts will include the links to the pictures that everyone took.
