We were thinking of camping over Thanksgiving weekend.  DD and I are off of school on Wednesday so we can do a long weekend.  But where to go?  We don't want to drive more than 9 or 10 hours each way so we were thinking Savannah, Ga. or maybe around Hilton Head?  I know we won't be able to swim but walking on the beach would sure be nice.

Any ideas would be appreciated,  thanks in advance.

Try Ocean Lakes CG at Myrtle Beach, SC.
We are all in the 3000 camping section
Nice CG with lots to do for the kids, enclosed Swimming pool and hot tub...
We are going down with 4 other families. I have Tuesday thur Sunday off. I am planning on going down Tuesday afternoon and the family coming down Wednesday morning..The kids are out of school Wednesday till Sunday. So this has become our New Thanksgiving thing.. Cook lots of food and have a big dinner with all and just chill around CG.. Friday morning the gals go shopping like they would at home..
Last 2 years it has been fun... Last year we had 6 families total. I think only 5 this year so far.

I have off all Thanksgiving week, though Jeffrey, if he is home by then (he has been in trouble) will be in school part of the week. Raymond is opposed to towing that far (but you know me, I'm not) and he liked the fishing pier at Apache (we had a time share just down the beach from Apache and Raymond LOVES fishing), but hated MB, in general (Jeffrey loved it).

I'm thinking...will see if I can talk my silent partner into the drive with the camper, it is 9 or 10 hours NOT towing from the Delaware Memorial Bridge (live less than a half mile from there).

OK.  DH just told me that we are camping at Skidaway State Park near Savannah, Georgia for Thanksgiving.  Has anyone been there?  It sure looks nice on their web site.

I have to teach on Monday (22nd) and Tuesday but we are so close that I can drive in to work for two days then drive back our in the evening. No biggie. My brother and his family will be there in his hybrid. My mom and Stepdad will drive in on Thanksgiving to eat with us. I can't wait.

Well we're headed to Long Key State park on the 23rd for the long weekend. My brother in law is coming down from Orlando to camp with us. Looking forward to that. My BIL and his family has camped with us on various occasions and we've had a blast. I'm headed down to Brasil on the 10th to do some business and I'll be back on the 19th. I enjoy going to Brasil, more so for my friends who have become family over the years, but I'm feeling sad about leaving my family for 9 days. It's a very difficult thing to do, but looking forward to my camping trip when I get back is making the trip more bearable. Basically you gotta do what you gotta do. I don't know if any of you know what I do for a living but I travel quite a bit. I speak four different languages fluently and I travel to Central and South America and the Caribbean Islands often. I take my Laptop and keep in touch with PUT and my family in Miami on line and over my international cell phone. Next week at this time I'll be getting back from fishing the Amazon and it's tributaries. Fishing the Amazon is an experience in itself, again I don't know if any of you know what Peacock Bass is but it comes from the Amazon and we usually catch 30 pounders. Which is like catching big game fish. There's nothing like fishing the Amazon, most of the people who travel on the plane with me are headed down just for that.

I went (by myself, of course) to Greenbelt National Park and took the Metro to the Smithsonianfor two beatiful (but cloudy) days of sight seeing (sunday and Tuesday). Had to take a day off in between as the feet were sore, got a pedicure Sunday evening.

Left on Saturday came back Thanksgiving day in time to unhook and cook a feast. Ya think that they would have done something?? I had dishes waiting for me too...

Great campground if you like dry camping, a TGI Fridays is across the street from the entrance to the park, To the right a half mile is Dennys, a Safeway and other places to shop ond eat.  To the left is everything from Boston Market to Quiznos and a Mall and Giant supermarket.  No Walmart ion site, but this being DC area and big city and all, well I stayed close to the campground unless on the Metro.

This Metro at the Greenbelt station goes within 3 blocks of the Mall at the Archives building and the East and West Building to the Gallerys of Art.  No switching metros...all the better for me as I was intimidated enough.  I found parking at the meters more economical as $2.00 in the meter was for 6 hours and my feet could only do 4 to 5 at a strech. $3.50 to park in the lot.  After 9:30 the round trip was $4.70 to the Archives and back.

Campground was virtually empty, Camp Hosts had me park across from them when I stopped to ask if there was a level site side to side. I had pulled through one and backed into about 6 others.  I have Lynx levelers, but not enough to really do the 2 to three inches side to side with double axiles. Site 128 (technically a handicapped site) was perfectly level side to side. And across from the bath house.

Only one shower in the bathhouse, so not sure how that would be when busy in the summer. Can hear noise (big rigs and occasional sirens) from Keniworth Ave and there is a trail to Kenilworth and Good Luck Road (the camphost says it is about a half mile from loop D to Good Luck Raod) that if you follow Good luck Road, will take you to the College Park Metro station.

Deer came almost to the camper, had a critter in the trash, I had forgotten to take it to the dumpster and it had chicken strips left over from the day before. But this was a polite critter and did not leave trash strewn, just the bag was in the bottom of the popup trash can. Saw a red fox.  At Smithsonian, in one of the yards, I got pictures of an albino squirrel and of little birds (wrens maybe) waiting for a handout while I ate my muffin (aka lunch) in the back of the Castle.

I would like to go back in the spring and see more of the Smithsonian. Make sure you have a good deepcell battery, espcially if it is cold.  I did something I do not recommend for people with more than one or especially with children. I have a large jar candle, I kept it lit at night, with the Bantam turtled, and running the heater to first take off the chill and then turning it down, the candle helped keep the trailer a little warmer. Would not work as well with a popup or if I had popped out. Have a good set of shoes and I did something else I hate doing, wore socks almost constantly (I am a barefoot, raised in Florida during the hippy era kind of person).
