internet parent control software

wondering if anyone uses any of these? and Which one.

We tried using earthlinks and giving DS his own log on but it seemed to "jam" up the computer. I'm thinking we need to seriously investigate this, as last weekend while he was playing some internet game he says "mom I've met a new friend (whatever the log on name was) and he's 12!"  :yikes: So that led into a 20 minute discussion (again)
about the internet.
The internet is not in his room, it's here in the bonus room next to  the kitchen (you get the picture) while it looks like he's playing a game which he is , AND he's "chatting" with someone who's also playing the game.

We use the parental controls that come with Norton Systems Works.  It seems to work ok.   I had to unblock Pop Up Times and some other sites it thought were "inappropriate".
